do you have a physio you could consult with? My thought is that you could try, and if it helps, great! and if it doesn't then stop.
The good thing about using crutches is that it makes your pain more visible to others - people give you extra space and time.
If you do self prescribe crutches, if you use one, you need to use it in the opposite side to the ankle that hurts so that it goes to the ground the same time as that foot does. When co ing up and down stairs go up with your good side first and come down with your bad side first.
