How Can I Have Sprained My Foot Without Realising?

One minute I'm fine, cooking the evening meal. Then when I sat down to eat, my foot suddenly starts hurting along the outer edge and across the instep like a sprain. I didn't fall, slip or twist it so how can it just flare up without warning? Mr L sprang into action with the elastic bandage, Deep Heat and painkillers, and after an hour or so elevating the foot, it feels a little easier but still not right. Any ideas on how it happened?

..and clothes aswell, of course! ;)
Have you been doing anything physical with repetition using that foot, say digging with a spade or something similar?
you've strained a cuboid ligament, if it is just ahead of the ankle.....I had that recently.....rest and actually cold is better...like a pack of Birds Eye peas on it. It's quite a sensitive area around that bone. Have a google...
One too many sherries whilst cooking?
I should hope so! :0)

Eliina -Lol - don't do gardening!
DTC - thanks for that, will get an ice-pack out.
Captain2 - think I'll stay clear of the sherry though nice thought! Apparently best to avoid alcohol after a sprain as it increase blood flow to the area.
Thanks for the helpful comments.

Oh ha ha! ... So you have this cuboid thing, how did you manage that los :0?
She was born with one, Lina - as you were - or rather that is two, one for each footie...
But what's caused the strain Dt ... persistent aren't I .. ;0)
los .... los!! ... What did you do? I shall have to come back another day, I need to go to bed
To that, Lina, I can't say....mine appeared from nowhere, the feeling that it was a ligament strain - having had those and it certainly wasn't gout.....(that I also know about).
By the way that ain't my foot no way would I wear that colour nail varnish ;-)
too pink for me, tony....

does this make sense, losgigs....
^ Look at that ... we've got a post mortem on yer foot los! So that's where it is, May be you tied a shoe strap too tight? That's miss Marples summing up, really going to bed now x
G, night Miss Marple ;-)
