Re- Gastroscope.
9 Answers
Had it done today at about 12pm. With sedation and throat spray! If nervous like me, I'd recommend it. Anyway, turns out I have Gastritis and Hiatus Hernia. I'm not too sure what Hiatus Hernia actually is. Can someone who has it maybe explain. Thanks.

Yes I haVE. Look it up online. They should have given you an information sheet from the hospital about it. Its like a valve that allows food into the stomach, but doesnt allow the stomach acid back out. But with a Hiatus Hernia the value is not working properly and the stomach acid gets back out of the stomach and into the oesophagus and can cause problems like heartburn and Barretts' Oesophagus (which I have). But I dont know what Gastritis is.
Hi Patsy I'm so glad it went OK. I was diagnosed with hiatus hernia after I had mine done and was prescribed omeprazole 20 mg which sorted the problem out. I was suffering with what I thought was acute indigestion for months and felt wretched drinking Gaviscon like it was going out of fashion but all is fine now.

That’s incorrect, Kassee.
The stomach sits just below the diaphragm. This is a sheet of muscular tissue that separates the bottom of the chest cavity from the cavity where the stomach and intestines reside. The diaphragm moves up and down, expanding the chest cavity and enabling you to breathe.
There is a gap in it where the oesophagus (the tube from your mouth to your stomach) passes through. Sometimes the stomach distends and pushes its way through the diaphragm and causes damage to it. That is a Hiatus Hernia. (“Hiatus” means gap).

New Judge is correct.......a bit of stomach is in the chest rather than being in the abdomen, where it should be.
Gastritis is really a non specific term, meaning inflammation of the stomach and in your case is due to acid irritating the stomach lining.
No big deal....no cancer.....lose weight and take the tablets.

Thanks for your input Sqad. I'll sure be glad to get back on tablets! I've just said to OH I'm going to loose a bit of weight. I'm not terribly overweight but definitely need to loose at least half a stone, and take it from there. By the way sqad, what do you think the pains were I was getting in my top back between shoulder blades? It felt like trapped wind. Extremely painful to the point of feeling I was going to pass out. That's one of reason I had this procedure. Tia.
