Smelling Nice

Recently her indoors brought out a cannister of deodorant from my supply of birthdays/ christmas presents that has been sitting in a bag over several years .
This morning I just happen to notice on the base of the canister that it's got on it use by date of 2011.
Why is there the need for a use by date on this product and what are the implications ( if any ) of using it so far after the use by date ?

//The aluminum salts in antiperspirant expire, but solid deodorant ingredients last an indefinite amount of time, according to Outside Online.//
So , i take it that , because the aluminum salts expire and therefore would not be doing the job of an antiperspirant , that would be the only reason , for having the expiry date .
