My 19yr old daughter has just been diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells in her cervix.  The doctor says it could get better on it's own(!!!) and she has to have another biopsy in 3months and it won't get very bad in this time.  I am of course extremely worried about the delay.  Does anyone know if this is normal treatment???

obviously I'm no medical expert, but when I was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells, I was taken into hospital fairly quickly for a colposcopy, which confirmed the existence of the cells, then again fairly quickly had a loop cone biopsy (removal of wall of cervix).  My doctors certainly didnt hang about once they had detected the pre-cancerous cells.  Like I say, I'm no doctor but Ive never heard of pre cancerous cells "getting better on their own", I mean thats exactly why we have smears, to detect these!  I'd advise her to make an appt with her doctor again and discuss this further.
I too had an abnormal smear result earlier this year, I was called in for a second smear, and then a colposcopy at the hospital. The colcoscopy showed the abonormal cells, and during the same procedure, the cells were removed. I have since had another smear, the results were normal. Bear in mind that I waited approx. 2 months between having the second abnormal smear, and going in for the colposcopy. Abnormal cells are treated early on to avoid progression later in life (i.e my doctor told me it can take decades to progess into anything serious if it does at all, though obviously, i'm no expert, and there will be variations on this). I have been told I will need to have more regular smears from now on, to dectect & treat any changes in the future.

After checking on the Internet I phoned the doctor, and she assures me that my daughter has "low-grade SIL" which can clear up on its own, and that they are keeping an eye on her but no worries yet. Another smear test in 3 months - not a biopsy.
I hope it all works out ok for you netibiza.  I had a friend who was in the same situation not too long ago and the next test she had was clear.  Good luck.

Thanks to you all, it's just that over here, I'm not too confident about the treatment, and although we speak the lingo when it comes to medical things it's all a bit daunting.

Hi Neti, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter.

Some years ago, I had pre-cancerous cells diagnosed after a smear test. My GP referred me to our local hospital, where they removed them by cone biopsy. I have had no further problems, but have regular smear tests for obvious reasons.

My sister also had pre-cancerous cells & the same precedure as I did & she has had no recurring problems either.

If you or your daughter are not happy with the advice given, you could always ask for a second opinion - even if only to put your minds at rest.

Let's know how things go Neti, although I'm sure your daughter will be absolutely fine. Take care. -x-

Hi Netti, I've also had pre-cancerous cells, I won't add anything as all above have given what I would have said.

Give my love to your daughter, tell her everything will be fine.Try not to worry Netti, I'll be thinking of you XX

Hi netibiza, I had pre-cancerous cells 20 years ago and I'm sure that I had one smear test (after which they were found) then had to wait a couple of months (may have been 3) before having a second smear test. I was told at the time that this was because they have to make sure that it is pre-cancerous cells and not something else corrupting the test so if they leave you for a while and the second test comes back with the same results they know it is genuine. I went on to have a cone biopsy and have had regular smear tests since, though everything has been ok since (touch wood). Please remember that these are PRE cancerous cells, not full blown cancer and that nothing is really going to happen in the next three months. It may even be that a second smear test is clear. Keep your pecker up!

a few days late but am going to answer anyway.

my drs dont offer smear tests to girls under the age of 25 as many girls come back with pre cancerous cells whilst they are still developing... in fact these arent pre cancerous cells at all but just shows up as if they are.

That is what I thought and why I didn't send her for smear tests earlier, but over here they start smear tests at 14!!!  Anyway all seems under control.  Thank you all very much.
your daughter may have had a low level of pre cancerous cells on the cervix, which could go away on its own. they should be doing biopsys or colposcopys every so often to see if the pre cancerous cells are getting better, or if they are getting worse. treatment would be needed if it got worse.
