white substance coming from throat gland...

one day i felt something funny in my mouth when i woke up. i got it out and it was this little glob of off-white stuff. kind of firm but not hard. smelt funny (like nothing i've smelt before - and not a good funny!)

i looked in my mouth with a torch and at the back - on the side of my throat (level with the dongle bit in the centre / roof of mouth) - the section just before the tonsils - i saw the same whitish stuff sitting there. i went to scrap it off gently with my nail but as i put a bit of pressure on the side of where the white bit was, more came out. it came from a hole in the side, which is still there now.

I didn't have a sore throat when this first happened, but it's happened on the other side of my mouth now - a couple of times. i do have a sore throat and slightly swollen glands now - and i don't know if it's related but it's not actually sore where the hole is.

does anyone know what on earth this is?

i am fairly sure it isn't my tonsils. i think they are slightly further back. it's not pus or a cist / abcess gone bad etc - because it is the same looking, feeling, smelling thing each time and from the exact same location on either side of the mouth... can anyone at all help?

JohnGalt - This is exactly it! i'ts been a couple of years actually since i posted my problem, whichi si when it first started happening. i'm now used to it and have come to the conclusion that it is something that forms in pits in my tonsils and every now and then i check them and can open the hole and push out the white stuff. it doesn't hurt and doesn't seem to give me any problems, so i don't worry anymore - just try to keep them clean and clear. THANKS for responding though - you have shown me that I am not alone and not a freak of nature! LOL xXx
Sounds like what you have are calculi of the tonsil, or tonsilloliths. If the little crevices in your tonsils are slightly larger, you're more prone to food particles being trapped. This is normal & what tonsils are supposed to do! They trap foreign bodies (bacteria, etc.) before they get into your system and help "train" the immune system for possible future infections. Now, saliva contains digestive enzymes that break down food particles, and what's left over & stuck in your tonsils end up looking nothing like what went into your mouth :). The starch/carbs break down and the body goes to work trying to fix things (i.e. rid you of the foreign lodged body in your tonsils). Bacteria grow on the leftover food, white blood cells attack the bacteria, and whatever keratin/protein is leftover from the cellular remains = the spongy "funny smelling" things embedded in the crevices of your tonsils. There's a bit more, but that's the basic idea. Nothing to really worry about unless they really irritate your throat, in which case see your doctor. In the meantime, rinse with either saltwater, or diluted hydrogen peroxide if you have mild irritation. Best of luck!
i got quincy 4 times, each time i ended up in hospital for at least a week. at the end they lanced my troat and had to remove my tonsils it was so bad. feel sorry for anyone who has to suffer quincy, don't ignore it though, it can kill you...

thanks alot Thulie for your response! very in depth explaination of the matter. i totally agree with your answer - i'm sure that this is what it is/was. i've had it for a while now and have come to cope with it - every now and then i keep a check on it and try to keep my mouth nice and clean. it certainly has never been as bad as when i first discovered this stuff and it seemed back then like i had a never ending supply of it and was convinced i had cancer or something! just glad it was something so benign in the end.
I get the same thing in my throat. The tonsils seem to produce this stuff and I can only describe it as small amounts of white or off white paste which has a strong odor which reminds me of bad breath. Perhaps it is caused by the same bacteria that produce bad breath. I think it is an infection caused by a bacteria or even a yeast infection. I think that it is an opportunistic infection that takes hold when your resistance is low or you are run down. It could be responsible for your sore throats. Also I think it is a chronic bug. It lives in your throat permanently but will reassert itself when your resistance is low. Try a mouth wash like corsidyl and improve oral hygiene. You could always get the doctor to take a swab. I had this done but nothing nasty was found. People who suffer from stress often complain of a sore throat and suffer lower immunity. I dont think it is serious but I do think it is symptomatic of something else that you may not have considered. Perhaps you are under more stress or you have had a major change in your routine. If it is a nasty bug taking hold then perhaps your system is out of balance. Maybe those pro biotic drinks may help.
