Can Omeprazole taken long term 40mg per day cause a chronic dry cough or frequent lung infections? My mother has been taking Omeprazole for the last 3 years and has progressively gone downhill, she has a chronic cough and occasional breathing issues, she has had a several lung infections which have been treated by antibiotics and she has had a test for asthma and an xray which we assume was clear.
Odd. Her spirometry was normal and antibiotics have not given her any benefit. Antihistamines have not made a difference. I think Sqad is right - it's time she was scoped. The other thing she could try is coming off her Omeprazole for a period of time so see if that makes a difference to her symptoms.
I think Woofgang is right in what she says. It's the acid reflux causing the cough. I was on Omeprazole for 3-4 years and they suddenly stopped working. My doctor changed them for a different one, Lanzoprazole. Made a big difference for the better. So maybe she could ask doctor to change them?
Omeprazole did buqqqer all for my gall bladder and then my gout, ibuprofen far more effective. The side effects that you describe, I leave for those far more qualified in pharmaceuticals than I am...what works for some may not work for others though...just a thought?
DTC, omeprazole is an antacid, ibuprofen is pain relief, not sure why you had omeprazole for gout? Omeprazole may be prescribed WITH ibuprofen as it protects the stomach.
