I don't know about the number one cause of death in the UK but i think that the figures were about 1,600 children who contracted measles died. It was a devastating illness and as i mentioned in my "removed" post, only Drs over retirement age have ever seen a case of measles, but in an epidemic, a GP might see 5-10 cases a day depending upon the size of the practice and revisiting them routinely was a logistic nightmare ......it couldn't be done.
The main complications were middle ear disease and pneumonia and there was a fierce argument as to should these children be given antibiotics routinely to prevent these complications.
I think that there was an outbreak in Wales some years ago which was blamed on the reduction of parents immunising their children with the MMR vaccine.
