Went for my yearly review (bloods) and was told they were doing HbA1c blood test as last time it was 42 and apparently it should be between 20 - 41. This they told me, makes me Pre-diabetic, although nobody told me at the time. This time, the figure is 37. Does this mean I am now in the clear or does it mean I need to cut back on sugar and other stuff to hopefully get it even lower?

Below 42 ( minimoles/mol) is on the verge of normal and prediabetic ( in other words , watch your diet).
Now your figure is down to 37, then you obviously are doing something right.............keep on doing, what you are doing.
That should read 42 and not below 42...apologies.

Thanks sqad. I've never heard of this blood test before and the range is quite wide 20-41, but hopefully with a sensible diet and a bit of exercise I might get it even lower. Can't understand why I wasn't told about this when they first noticed it.
It is quite a clever test ( I wont go into the biochemistry of it) but basically it tells one how you have managed your diabetes over the past 3 months.......have you been a good boy or a bad one. With a blood sugar analysis it just gives your blood sugar reading for just that moment in time, hence if you behaved yourself for a couple of days ( diet wise) you could get away with a normal reading, thus fooling the medics. You can't fool them with the Hba1c reading.
Sorry to intrude.

I’m curious as to why I need to keep mine between 48-53?
Possibly because you're type 1 queenie.
Thank you ethandron.

Was just looking at my scale chart and it says 42 is outwith Low.

After today I can now focus on bringing mine back down from 68 :(
Have you managed to get the new blood glucose measuring device yet queenie? My son has found his results have really tightened up since using it. I know your diabetes has been difficult to control but maybe this (Ive forgotten the name of it)gadget would help?
The Freestyle Libre - I haven’t no as it hasn’t been released up here yet. I believe it was meant to be this month. I will be enquiring when I go to see my nurse next month.

I’ve been under a lot of stress recently so I was expecting a rise which is really bad because I was going down and doing really well.
I know you probably will, queenie, but keep on at them to give you one. I'd think you'd be an ideal candidate for it, with the problems you have controlling your blood sugars. My son tests so many more times during the day, and also if/when he wakes in the night, and adjusts his insulin accordingly.
You'll get there, now all the stress of today is over. Not easy I know, but worth all the effort to keep yourself on track :)
It all comes down to if the Local Governing Body is prepared to pay for it sadly.

I can manage without it but i felt in relation to working towards getting pregnant it would be a handy tool to have.
// but i felt in relation to working towards getting pregnant it would be a handy tool to have// - could be misconstrued, Queenie, Private Eye worthy your 'quote' is......
