Dont forget, if the patients are getting the flu and not attending appointments some of the doctors and nurses could also be ill, we've had quite a few clinics cancelled in my hospital due to the consultants and doctors being sick.
That's just taking the piste.
It is a well known phenomena, conferences are scheduled for ski resorts in the winter and sunshine and beach resorts in the summer
The doctors book these and get paid to basically go on holiday.
Not just doctors all professionals are at it. There are lawyers and solicitors conferences , business management conferences, media , PR. you name it there will be a conference at a desirable location , with plenty of free time so they attendees can have a free holiday and get paid to go.
Another line is 'floating conferences' yes a conference on a cruise ship.
They can even get away with taking the family on these and get paid for attending.
Eddie

"They can even get away with taking the family on these and get paid for attending."

Can they? Who told you that? I think that you may well be mistaken.
You can certainly take your secretary, your theatre sister or your mistress, but you would have to pay out of your own pocket.
Just another Eddie assumption.

How could you possibly contradict Eddie Sqad?
He knows everything ;o)
Many conferences offer discount prices for family members to accompany the main attendee , there are often special social activities and trips arranged for the family members while the actual conference sessions are running.
Annual Conference Delegate Places Launched

Each year the charity runs The Haemochromatosis Conference for patients and family members. This is an opportunity to hear from eminent medical speakers.
^ Just one example that came up in the first few Google results.
There are hundreds more.
Even doctors, saints that they are, will have to apply for time off for holidays or whatever.
They don't just not turn up for a week or two while sunning themselves between seminars.
Is it warm on Mercury Eddie? I only ask as you seem to live on a different planet to most of us!
Here is another one, showing prices for members, non members, family members ,children under 16 and under 5.

Not sure UK NHS staff would be members of the IACP.

If the Conferences are of no use, they should be scrapped - if they are of some use then better planning for when they are scheduled may be worth a look.
Eddie, the OP was about doctors, not "patients and family members".
According to the Mail this training course is due to take place later this month so can’t be affecting the current situation
Eddie...Google as much and as often as you like, but the practicality is, that NO Health Authority will fund a doctor and his family to go to a conference......unless all the family are doctors.
Quite so, sqad.

The only time I took a companion to an NHS approved event (UK Dementia Conference actually) it actually saved the NHS money - they paid half of a double room (instead of a single) and half my usual mileage rate for travel. Warwickshire County Council were equally careful when I travelled to represent them at similar events.
That better be true Dave, remember, we can Google it. :-)
Aye, Doogie - my signed-off claim form is probably in some Nuclear Proof Bunker in Nantwich and will be available for perusal even when only cockrocahes roam the burnt out shell of our civilisation ...
About twenty years ago a neighbour who was a medical rep had his garage full of quite expensive freebies - he reckoned the greediest of all were the hospital consultants and reckoned the main reason they had a Secretary was to back load all the appointments when they regularly swanned off on jollies.
I was not suggesting the health authority would pay for the family, but as one person gets a paid for place it can be cheaper way to get a family holiday in a nice location and good hotel. Why else would conference organisers offer places for family members and children at a discount to the full price ?
