Is there an equivalent to carpal tunnel syndrome which affects the hip joint?

I have a problem with my left hip during the night, which wakes me with a burning pain which is only relieved after about ten minutes of changing position and lying on my back.
Is there a trapped nerve somewhere in there, in the same vein as carpal tunnel syndrome?
I have no problems during the daytime and have no pain in my hips at all.

Is it more internal or on the outside? Trochanteric Bursitis (where the fluid filled sac gets inflamed) can be horribly painful and nasty burning type pain, could be, if it's a possibility, that if you are lying on that side at night that it is aggravating it.

Oddly enough Tilly....there is.
Just as the median nerve in the wrist is trapped in the carpal tunnel, so the sciatic nerve can be compressed by a muscle in the thigh called the pyriformis, leading to pain in the hip and down the back of the leg which is uncommon but is called the Pyriformis Syndrome.

Definitely internal, Eve and since I have no control over which side I lie, it is always my left hip pain that wakes me up during the night.

Sqad, I had a look but the pain is not in my buttocks. It is definitely deep inside my hip.

I have no problems with my hips and am very flexible. I can still touch my toes, no problem. :-)

Tilly, I wasn't suggesting that Pyriformis Syndrome was the cause of your pain, i was answering your OP as to if there was a condition in the hip, that was compressing a nerve, similar to carpal tunnel syndrome.
I would suggest that an X-Ray on your hip might be a prudent next move.

I have the same problem, and after x-ray have been told that the cause is arthritis. I take a pain killer each night, and rub a certain heat cream (very smelly) which seems to help a bit.
