CANCER just the word itself sounds evil ,there are so many of us effected by this scourge, when I posted on nailits thread I was thinking,
Will we ever find a cure? Billions of pounds poured into trying to find a cure for years and still nothing, men on the moon technology at its best but yet nothing, maybe one day.

im not sure, but i do hope so.
in the meantime, we need t focus on prevention and early detection i guess
I ope so, but the life expectancy for cancer sufferers increases all the time so every day things improve, just not fast enough for those of us who have loved ones who are affected x
Research is without doubt making enormous strides. Cancer used to almost always be an automatic death sentence. Not so now. They're getting there.

Naomi 24 I hope your right that they are getting there,
I was never a religious person but any belief I had is now gone,if that makes me a sad or bad person ,so be it,
I have seen in my long life so many good living people young and old ,
suffer from this horrible disease ,and I wonder why.
I wish the powers that be would stop blaming people's lifestyles for the increase in cancer. "You're too fat, not active enough, eating the wrong food, drinking too much" etc. Too much time is spent on that and not enough is being spent on finding out what it is in the environment that is poisoning people.
How many of us have asked 'Why?' I know I have but there's no rhyme or reason, Jordy. It's a ba&*** disease.

237sj you’re right in regards to what you say anyone who knows my wife would agree with you,she doesn’t smoke,an occasional glass of wine 1,eats healthy and keeps fit with yoga, result breast cancer twice in 16 years.
As a cancer sufferer myself, I tear my hair out when I see all the money that is being sent as foreign aid, but never gets used for it's intended purpose. CRUK needs money all time to research causes and possible cures for all types of cancer. I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in July 2010, had surgery followed by 7 weeks radiotherapy - my PSA now remains constant at 0.1. However, my son in law's father has also been diagnosed with the same cancer and due to the progress of in terms of effectiveness with radiotherapy he is on the mend. I know there are differences in the severity of the cancer but when I was diagnosed I had a Gleason Scale of 3+3 - my son in laws father was Gleason Scale 3+4. All down to research and progress. If you are not aware of the Gleason scale, please Google it. Thanks for listening.(Or should I say reading !!)

Naomi 24 we just lost our lovely niece 34 with a 15 months old baby, girl to cancer 6 weeks ago .
For many reasons, 'we' are dying of fewer diseases these days and life expectancy is rising.

Cancer is one of those diseases that is still prevalent and so we are more likely to die of it than smallpox, for example.
Sadly the more we learn the more it seems to come down to a combination of genetics and lifestyle choices. It may be exposure to environmental toxins are the third of an unholy trinity. But...lives are being saved or extended. I know how precious those extra years can be. Targeted therapies will probably be the next bit thing as they become fully mainstream and testing for genetic tendencies may lead to stem cell treatments or eventually correction.
I grew up in a village with a population of about 500 (including outlaying farms) I knew who lived in every house and my Dad knew their parents before them. People did get to a good age and most of the time they died of heart attacks and strokes. Now, I can go around the village in my mind and just about every third house has been touched by cancer. We are being exposed to something that previous generations weren't and nobody knows what it is. At least with heart disease, you can do something to prevent it but with cancer it seems like one is just a sitting duck.
Distress and anger when exposed to the effects of cancer are understandable but it is worth remembering that the advances others have mentioned are there. Also worth remembering is that the same affliction is not equally threatening or equally immediately in all parts of the world - the UK is not the worst but it certainly is not the best either. And there are considerable variations within the UK too.

Good point 237
Eating meat causes cancer apparently. Tell that to Linda Mcartney or my cousin. Both died young on a meat free diet.
Smokin causes cancer... tell that to my dad, grandad various aunties etc who all died of things EXCEPT cancer and at a ripe old age as well.
Smoking causes cancer...tell that to my mums neighbour who is 92 this yr and smoke 20 a day (I know.. I buy them for her) and she doesn't have as much as a cough.

I know people in their late 80's who are overweight and eat crap and are as healthy as hell.

Think its more to do with having some kind of peace of mind than any body chemicals that they shouldn't have.
