I had an appointment last week for a problem I’ve had in my right eye. I have received a letter back from the hospital today saying the tests reveal a ‘tentative’ diagnosis of ‘ wet age related macular degeneration (AMD) As you may remember, I have had a thyroid condition for many years. In the early stages of my thyroid condition I developed thyroid eye disease (TED) ...
... and although I have always had sensitivity to bright light things are o.k. This recent ‘possible’ AMD diagnosis has caused me to remember my earlier eye disease. In your opinion, can a thyroid condition with ‘TED’ have any connection? ..
.. I took to googling the two and came up with this but as a lay person cannot really get to grips with it. Is it saying there’s a ‘possible connection to thyroid hormone or th actual thyroid condition, or indeed any connection at all? Thank you.
Elleena.......a quick answer for you.
There is no established connection between AMD and TED, as TED is manifested by exophthalmos ( bulging eyes), which have nothing to do with AMD.
HOWEVER........some studies have shown a tentative link between AMD and thyroid disorders.......TENTATIVE......more studies needed but for all intents and purposes and in answer to your question, the answer is NO.
