What is the body appendics for?

Not sure if that is the right spelling but my cousin just took her out in an appendecitis operation. If that 'organ' is supposed to be useless, what is it still here for?

i think it has something to do when humans evolved and were eating raw meat the appendix used to do something useful but now i think its redundant n shrunk in size since we cook our meat. most prob wrong tho lol
