No, a family member (no pun) has had this done and apparently you pop in to hospital for a day they make you numb down below do some scissor work and within a few hours you are walking home. No hob-nobbing with the missus for about a week and then back to (relative) normality. The place you have it done should offer:
consultation/counselling
procedure
aftercare
follow-up semen testing and results.

I can well recommend it. I cannot risk another pregnancy, and this has given us lots of peace of mind. It has also made the whole nocturnal business far less sticky too, which was always a bug bear. plus all round really!
take your nurofen before the procedure and then at the specified times for 48 hours and pracetomol on the off hours also (ie you will then have a pain killer every 2 hours, or every 4 hours if you want it through the night) that way you really will have limited discomfort.
good luck
There can be complications like any op.
he must not overdo it like changing a tyre the next day that is stupid as it can cause bleeding and unecessary strain on the groin, twiating the loose vas ends sao they atach to the scrotal scar etc. Thats why they tell you to support it DOH!
You must be made aware of how it is done. They used to mak an incision, pull out then cut the vasdeferens then either tie it back on itself or put a staple at the end where sperm can still come out into the scrotum.
it is assumed that the two ends heal up and seal
XXXBe warnedXXXX they can remain open and despite what you expect having a vasectomy is no guarantee he will not pass sperm through the gap between the va defs and you could get pregnant again.
I was really ******** to be told this by the consultant.
Thats why they do the sperm count to see its not coming through. it needs to be done a couple of times too.
get the urologist to give him sonething in writing . Ask about the possibility of pregnancy after a vasectomy.
Thats the flip side
Both my Father and my boyfriend have had the snip. They experienced a couple of days of pain but no more than that.
One thing my boyfriend did say is that there are several ways of doing it. Mango Pete voiced concerns - my boyf had the vas cut and then the ends folded back on themselves and sewn so they couldn't rejoin.
Don't know if this is common practice - maybe he could discuss this with the doc.
It is great not to have to worry about contraception and neither of the men in my life has ever had any regrets - isn't it great to be able to talk so openly with your Dad about such things!!!
you normally have a local for this, not a general unless there is a special reason. My hubby had a local, and a slight complication in as much as it was deeper than the surgeon reckoned and took some digging and delving, but it was still fine, see my previous post...
as an aside:
He was very good about not complaining about having it done seeing as I had had a c-section under general and ended up in intensive care 2 months before!!!! ahhh what a sweet heart. he had it done for me, so i would never risk my life like that again (or maybe he just couldnt bear the thought of me dying and leaving him with 6 kids! a snip seemed like the lesser of the two evils...;-)
tradey - looking at all the posts above, I think most of the 'bad' experiences seem to have occurred some time ago. I am sure things must have improved since then, so why don't you have another look at the guidance pages on the Marie Stopes website (including the link I gave above) here: chopchop
Of course, you will hear about breast ops going wrong, bad experiences at the dentist etc, but these are facts of life and although unfortunate, do occur. I hope if this is what you and your partner decide to do that everything works out for you both with no complications. Your partner shouldn't be shy in having a chat with a doctor/specialist as it is a very common procedure these days.
my husbands 'wound' was less than a cm long. He didn't have any stictches, just a pressure dressing that you leave on for 24 hours. Honestly, google for the Marie stopes clinic in Uk, find one near you, read the PDF leaflet and give them a call. It is relatively cheap, it's a private hospital and you can schedule it for when you like...
It'll be fine and as you say, it is such an unecessary risk for you to take with another general. He doesn't need nearly the same, just a local, 'a little prick' haha and bob's your uncle......
After all the pain I had it was worth it. Just make sure the surgeon knows what he is doing and discuss the technique
ie get the vas defs tied back. MAKE SURE he is firing blanks get your man to rest for a couple of days if needed after the op and do not carry anything heavy for a week or so. Even if he feels he should.
having a child is a wonderful experience my 4th and 5th were twins.sweet lord... now it never happens to you does it. well it did to me.
You women go through life threatening experiences each time you have children the least he can do is have the op. Jus have it done properly. Probably best after christmas,
