I got to Tesco at 7.30 am expecting to queue for 30 minutes until they opened - I take a book with me to pass the time -but there was no queue. I couldn't believe that I was the first one but, no, I could go straight in as they now open at 7 am.

A pleasant surprise then,well done.
Just out of interest, why would you arrive at a shop at 7.30 knowing it would not be open until 8.00?
Well done, I'll have to check opening times for my local one and be there before the vultures ascent on it taking all my favourites.
I've stopped going to the big supermarkets. All the palaver gives me the hump! I went to B&Q yesterday for a new sprinkler for the garden. Never again! Well, at least not until this is all over.
Ours at 10am today = 3 out & 3 in. I left & used corner shop!

NewJudge, lock down has people terribly bored. That half hour waiting may be the highlight of the outing.
Waitrose at 10 this am...no queues in or out and very well-stocked. The shop felt deserted and I got some reduced bargains as well.
Since the lockdown and had a cold before that I've only being there twice in the past nine weeks. It has being the local shop for my essentials mainly.
"Just out of interest, why would you arrive at a shop at 7.30 knowing it would not be open until 8.00?"

Because if you arrived at 8:00 a.m you would probably find a queue had built up and it would take longer to get into the store to do your shopping.
Then arrive at 8.30 - 9.00 when the original queue has died down. I do exactly that and have never waited more than 5 minutes to get into my Tesco Extra. Very often I walk straight in.

It reminds me of one of my great uncles. He lived in London and had a sister who lived in North Devon (pre-motorway days). When visiting her he would always leave at 2am "to beat the traffic." The trouble was, so did everybody else!
We've not been to a large store for weeks but when we do start using them again we'll look at the live 'busyness' status on Google maps.

This tells you how busy the store usually is and a live comparison for today.

To see an example for Asda Corby - click on the tinyurl link below and then click on the Asda marker in the middle of the map - then scroll down the store info in the panel on the left :

Our Tesco seemed to have a permanent queue and at least by being there before it opened and at a reasonable place in the queue, you could be sure of getting in right away whereas later on it's waiting for x amount of people to come out before they let same amount in and sometimes the person in charge would disappear and not be in control of the situation. Also in the early days if you were after eggs, flour or pasta, it was helpful to get in early.
I know many on here love Tesco, but I wouldn't set foot over their door if you paid me. Their greed knows no bounds and I would rather support smaller local shops.
I'm with you maggiebee. I would never shop at Tesco's.
well you can support local shops and pay more plus fined a parking space and pay the charges, no thanks ill stick to all in one shopping with free parking
What’s the problem with Tesco as opposed to Asda, sainsburys, Morrison’s, etc?
derek-33 other supermarkets are available!
Mine's personal. Mr BD worked there over 30 years ago in their instore bakery. He had an accident at work, which was the company's fault, and he was off work for 14 weeks. He got sick pay but not accident pay so he went to Bakers Union who fought the case for him and he received all that he was owed plus a decent amount of compensation. Their tactics of delays and trying to wriggle out of any responsibility were despicable.
I did not mention Tesco's lol you lot presumed I only shop there
not you lot. 1 person
