Ok so I am sure this has been asked many times on here but humour me and give me your opinions?

Covid?

Real vs it’s “normal” flu
Man made vs naturally occurring
Extremely dangerous / contagious vs overblown hype?

One doesn't need to explain the dead people. Do you not realise that viruses can kill, and many viruses do ? Always have. The overblown bit is about the reaction, the paranoia, the chance to use it to dictate to the people overriding western values of citizen freedom, the choice to devastate the economy, and spend public money trying to alleviate the harm that...

Its possible it escaped from a research laboratory, rather than a wet market, as I understand that viruses are created, and then patented, for research and to find vaccines for novel diseases.
Just based on bits of information that I have gleaned.
Real, natural, overblown

Real, natural, we're learning to adapt to it
real, natural, contagious. That doesn't mean that I think that we will have to self isolate/face cover and so on forever.
1. Real
2. Not sure
3. Dangerous because we don't yet know completely what the after effects will be.
OG if its overblown, how do you explain all the dead people?
real, naturally occurring, dangerous.
Over 180000 Covid deaths nor recorded in the US alone in around 6 months.. Over 800,000 across the world- and you can add a lot to that as we know the figures are false or not available from some countries large and small

The *rate* of people dying from a virus is rather more than usual, though, no?
And, in any case, the argument is fundamentally broken. People die all the time, but we still have hospitals, because society as a rule doesn't like people to die without having tried to stop it. When something rolls around that appears to threaten to kill people even faster still, Society is bound to respond to that.

The number who have died or are dying is because the virus is new. That's why it made sense initially to limit the peak so the NHS wasn't overwhelmed. But that's been achieved. Last I heard now was UK deaths were now greater for flu than for Covid. Don't see this fuss for flu.
Don't see this fuss for flu.

there's a vaccine for flu.
I'm not convinced that "don't see this fuss for flu" is either entirely correct or indeed the right lesson to draw. When the flu gets bad (ie the 1918 flu), the world saw the same response (right down to the denial and conspiracy theories), tempered maybe a little by the end of the War and the fear that bad news was not what many countries wanted to hear. Moreover, isn't it worth while to take seriously threats to health that cause people to die in larger numbers than are strictly necessary? If, as here, it's causing (many) people to be more conscious about their hygiene, etc, I'd expect that to be a long-term positive.
Just as real as all the other nasty/deadly viruses out there I'm afraid.Sadly the over-reaction and failure to protect the infirm and the disregard to all other suffering people will certainly add to an ever growing death total.
Hopefully lessons will be learnt and we will all be prepared for pt II when it comes round.
Real.... I think right now we need to concentrate on protecting those likely to be most vulnerable to it, while letting others continue normally, as much as possible.
pixie I would say "offering protection" rather than protecting. Everybody gets to choose who can.
