It seems odd to me that even though surgeons have been wearing masks for many many years still some people feel masks are a waste of time, some even feel they actualy cause more disease/infection than they prevent, and theres still debate about whether they only help the person they meet rather than the wearer themselfs.
sqad , do they wear masks for their own safety, for safety of patients or both.... or is it just something they wear because they always have done and dont really know why else
I’m not sure what Sqad hopes to get from asking his question. Some of the answers already display a lack of basic understanding about what they’re supposed to do, possibly suggesting that the general public aren’t the best people to ask.
Not related to your question, Sqad, but when my wife had a caesar with epidural my wife found it hilarious that the tiny surgeon was wearing wellies and stood on a step.
She thought it even funnier when the surgeon said 'Oh sh**, my feet are soaked' after the big incision. My wife told her she should also wear hiking gaiters :D

There is nothing to suggest that wearing masks prevents prevent WOUND infections.
There is a multitude of opinions that suggest that masks prevent infections in other procedures such as hip replacements.
I would have thought that people who are against wearing masks during an epidemic wouldn't mind their surgeon not wearing masks for operations.
Bit of a hypothetical Qs Sqad , because it’ll never happen, operations take place in a sterile unit, the wearing of a mask through this pandemic doesn’t , it’s a bit like asking all the spectators at Wimbledon that question ,
I would expect no less from the profession. The respect I have for all the members of the NHS staff knows no bounds. I speak from personal experience and realise others might not hold the same opinion.
When certain standards slip we are on the greasy downhill slope.
Absolutely and that’s been like forever :0)
I don’t know what’s right and what’s wrong now, I only know asking people to wear a mask forever won’t work , we must live with it as we have the ‘flu
Why are you trying to compare a mask worn in a sterile surgical environment, put on correctly, worn for a relatively short period of time and then disposed of correctly with the muck ridden worn out things that more often then not end up on the pavement?
And, as I am sure you are more than aware, masks worn by a surgeon and others stop him/her/they dribbling into the open wound or blowing snot into it.
