For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ. a friend of my mother's is a pain control specialist,( consultant anaesthetist) in addition to the normal pain killers she recommends zinaxin ( ginger extract) and. curcumin ( turmeric extract) if you use anti inflammatory gels Pay the extra for the prescription strength ( you can still buy it from a pharmacy) and warm the skin before you apply them. Another option is capsaicin cream but to get a therapeutic strength it's better to get it prescribed. It was the treatment that scored highest for effectiveness in an Arthritis research council study. ( now versus arthritis I think) magnesium oil also scored reasonably highly for some of the sample.
I take glucosamine and chondroitin and also turmeric to try and stave off problems with my left hip. I've used the former before and it seemed to work on my knees which don't bother me at the moment. For my arthritic right hip I'm taking cocodamol and nefopam plus ibuprofen gel (higher strength) from the dr.
I tried glucosamine years ago...the jury stayed out. I also tried diclofenic...again the results were so so. I also tried a drug free gel called flexiseq which came in 2 versions. The one for wear and tear was more effective, but it's very expensive for what it does. I stick with paracetamol, etc. I've also used topical magnesium as it's always been helpful.
A few months ago when my knees became more painful, rather than uncomfortable, I connected it with resuming eating bread containing wheat, which along with other grains, is considered to be inflammatory. Stopped the bread and within a week I was back to uncomfortable as opposed to "in pain". I know some may scoff at this, but it's worth trying.
