I’m attempting to not put the heating on until I’m absolutely desperate.

But because I’m now quite cold all the time, I’m finding that I’m really hungry, and eating more! Anybody else get this, or know why this happens?

put the heating on
yes.....all to do with energy.
If the fire is getting low (cold) then you put coal on it and same with the human body, if you feel cold, then eat and the metabolism produces heat and you feel warmer.
Put the heating on for goodness sake, heat your house, no one will have power cut off , life can be very miserable when your cold.
...and don't forget that with the fuel handouts and the Winter Fuel allowance going from £200 to £500, you'll be better off than last Winter.
Hot water bottle?
more clothes perhaps?

Uniqlo do a Heattech range of light thermal underwear which isn't hugely expensive but really does help you stay warm without having to dress like the Michelin Person.

The reason that you eat more is because you are cold. Food is counted in calories. I'm not doing too well at explaining it That is energy, which is heat. I'm trying to say that calories=heat. Your body needs them. Hope this garbled explanation helps. I am not a scientist, as you can see. :)
Put the heating on. We did 2 days ago. We would rather live.

Thanks All. It’s miserable being cold, you’re right. I’m also really unproductive when cold as all I do is lie really still!!
I seem to remember reading somewhere that over 80% of the food you eat is used by the body to keep you warm...thats why if you are cold, your 'mind' makes you hungry!
Just do it, don’t succumb to heat or eat bilge
Like most mammals we seem to eat more in winter.
gingeebee 17:05, does everyone get the increase from £200 to £500?
T.I.A.
Have you actually had a hot meal tonight?

I couldn't contemplate having the heating on right now and I've got no appetite to boot. I'm sitting in front of the fan right now. I'm fighting a nasty cold so I guess it's my temperature.

I wish I could send you some of my body heat.
Fripfrip...the increase is for pensioners. It will come through whenever winter fuel allowance normally does.
Thank You pastafreak, that's good to know.
Every household should get £66 off their fuel bill in Oct and Nov and £67 from Dec. Thats what I've heard and its not means tested.
I had my heating on for an hour, I'm sitting wrapped in a blanket now, really warm. Put extra clothes on or your heating. It's horrible being cold.
It was so cold in my house, the temperature reached the setting where the heating comes on automatically. It’s awful to be cold. I have had it on for a few hours today.
I've mentioned this several times before on AB but it bears repeating: buy an electric blanket. It makes a huge difference getting into a nice warm bed - especially if like me you live in a difficult-to-heat old stone property - and you'll find you sleep much better, too.
They're not expensive, about £30.
The £300 for pensioners which comes with the winter fuel allowance mentioned previously is per household. So if you are a couple then it's £150 each. That's how I understand it.
