I am type 2 Diabetic,and taking Metformin.
Sadly, they seem to give me sporadic Diarrhea, but I take Imodium to counteract this.
Has anyone experience of Metformin, and it's side efects.I have asked my GP, but she says that Metformin is the most suitable. She approves of Imodium for the Diarrhea.
She did prescribe anothet Diabetic medication,as a sort of "add on" but that gave me even worse Diarrhea.
Any views or suggestions would be most helpful?

A month later, when i saw my own GP, he said i needed to lose some weight and that Metformin was the best for that. Together with a daily exercise routine, changing my diet and te tablets, i lost 6.5 Stone in about 18 months.
And, almost as each stone dropped away, my 4 a day regime was reduced by 1 tab. I have 'reversed' the type 2 and no longer need medication.
I do not recall suffering any side effects.
Yes I was on metaformin and did have diarrheoa. I also developed B12 deficiency so my medication was changed. I know everyone responds differently to medication, I am a retired nurse. I would ask your doctor for a blood test and check your B12 levels. There is a lot of negativity in the medical profession about mataformin. Are you followed in a diabetic clinic and is your doctor a specialist in diabetes or a GP? If not and it is only my opinion and a suggestion that you see a specialist in the treatment of diabetes. The Conquest should have a diabetes service
I am taking the slow release Metformin but honestly no difference from the standard. I am, shall we say, explosive all the time. That, with wind, means toilet spray down!
However that is far preferable to the constipation I had for years!
I live with it and its quite predictable, no accidents when out as yet.
Calmck, what is the negativity about metformin? I've not heard anything so would be interested to know as I've been taking it for about ten years.
NN, I've not had any side effects from it. I do have B12 injections every 12 weeks but that's because I have an autoimmune condition which stops me absorbing it.
My diabetes is managed at my surgery through the diabetes nurse where I have an hba1c blood test regularly, a foot check and a general chat about it, I haven't been seen by anyone else since my initial diagnosis at the hospital.
