But how can there be a punishment which fits this crime, will it be a fine & a slap on the wrists?

What does the law say? What do you say ?

chop their branches off?

as a two-man labour gang, rebuild Hadrian's Wall?

Perhaps they could see how they like being cut down to the stumps

Find another similar tree and hang them from it. Damn Savages.

I'm just curious why they did it.

That's interesting Chris - '12 years custardy max.'  That tree has got to be valued at more than £5,000 because no sum could replace it.

They could start by planting about a 1000 trees!!

A custodial sentence would appear to be appropriate.

Three years, out in eighteen months.

1 tree, think how many were destroyed for hs2

Obviously had the top bobbies on the case.

Special Branch?

You're out on a limb with that one, Doug.

Aye, they may yet be charged with treeson.

Trees on the HS2 route were hardly tourist attractions nor the only tree around that all appreciated. No comparison.

Oop north we all used to wear wooden shoes workin' in't mill, wi called em 'clogs'  😃

Reports in Irish media claim more than two miscreants, citing t'ree fellers.

I just cannot fathom what possible reason would someone go out of their way to cut a tree down.

I've said before in Answerbank that vandalism is a case where the punishment should fit the crime.   In this case cut off something of theirs which won't re-grow (the mind boggles).
