Does he/she actually decide anything that you couldn't have determined was necessary yourself?

I went to my GP with a problem this morning. After a brief examination he said "I'll refer you for a scan & prescribe some antibiotics as a precaution."  I coulda told him that!!!!!!!!!!

Then why do you bother going? One of these days you might be grateful for professional advice. AB is full of people who know everything better than the so-called experts or professionals.

On a practical note, I don't think you can just walk into a hospital and demand a scan; as for antibiotics, they are over-used and should be prescribed by doctors, not by self or blokes in the pub or online.

Hope you're feeling ok.

You might have known what you wanted doing but you don't have the means of doing it yourself. That's why you see the GP.

i used to dream of seeing a GP........

My initial thought is that you were lucky to get an appointment!

exactly tilly - they are gatekeepers for the NHS

Question Author

I rang at 8.30 when the phone line opens, 4th in the queue & got an appointment for 9.30.

what's a GP ? lol  x

Question Author

Do people really find it so hard to see a gp? I only know about my own experience but....

You got to see your GP – how did you manage to do that?

Question Author

I must live in a GP-rich area!

The service here is abysmal.  I was going to have to wait a month for a phone call - abd that was just to ask for a letter of referral to a private consultant.  The last time I asked for a phone appointment the wait was two weeks - so it's improving.  🙄

"You might have known what you wanted doing but you don't have the means of doing it yourself. That's why you see the GP."

And that's one of the biggest problems currently facing the NHS which nobody will tackle. They are largely surplus to requirements, but almost nothing can be done without seeing one and most patients have extreme difficulty doing that.

So what do they do? They go to A&E of course. They don't need to go there but they oftten have no alternative.

The NHS needs to move away from having "gattekeepers" to their services and develop a system where patients can self refer for joints/guts/bowels whattever is troubling them. But that won't be done.

Not just "walk in" but if I could make a hospital appt direct (with suitable questions answered) the GP wouldn't need to be involved.

GPs don't know anything.....

GPs are merely part of the process of keeping citizens away from hospitals by referring, getting appointments allocated then cancelling a couple of days before the appointed time leading to a follow up appointment some time in the future.

Unless you're a jakey, junkie or just fell off a small boat of course, then heaven and Earth will be moved.

Best of normal people just succumb to their ailments to make it simpler.

IF!

Thanks Doug  - TBH I don't mind succumbing to my ailments (we all gotto die right!) but I would prefer to do so painlessly which may require medical intervention.

Yes, I've long since called my GP a referral service.

erm you cant presribe and

you cant order  a scan -otherwise spot on!
