My partner went to bed on Saturday night perfectly fine and woke up on Sunday morning with an aching foot and can hardly stand on it. She didn't bang or injure it in any way. The pain is in the ball of her foot below the big toe. Any suggestions?

Had she been wearing high heels? I've read that to ease the pain after wearing them you should roll a tennis ball on the floor with the offending foot.
Hope this helps

Thanks Ali for your answer. She wasn't wearing heels. I've a feeling she may have to go to the doctor.
Now don't laugh but that is a classic gout symptom. Quite rare for women though so probably not!
Call NHS direct if you have to wait for a docs appointment, they are good 0845 464748
if this pain reoccurs it could be a lack of b12 and you must get the doctor to do some blood tests as i had a foot like that and as i am so stubborn i suffered it for over 7 years even though the pain made me sick and sweat..and eventually it spread to my spine..then i was in a mess,,if this pain comes back then it may be b12 and she will have nerve damage..and will need treatment i get injections..but you can also try the tablets..it may be something minor and the doctor will tell you but remember what i have told you as they dont test for b12 until its too late...i was nearly dead before they tested me..and i am not joking about that..so i try to make others aware ..
It sounds like plantafacitus (probably spelt wrong). I get it sometimes and it is quite painful. There are stretching exercises you can do to ease it. My doctor said that once you have it you are always prone to it. It can be due to a sports injury or 'fallen arches'. It used to be called 'policeman's foot' coz it can be brought on by lots of walking. If it gets really bad you can have an injection in your foot but apparantly it's agonisingly painful and doesn't always work. I still get it once in a while but I know it only lasts a few days at a time.
