my wife suffers with this! i will ask her what it is when she is talking to me again??

it may be a while! ;)
It sounds like plantar fasciitis. It's quite common and very annoying; I know several people who have had it. It goes away all by itself in a year or two, but there are lots of things you can do meanwhile to make yourself more comfortable. Start with a trip to your GP, then go to the Scholl shop, where they have nice soft squidgy things to put in your shoe. Ibuprofen helps, too.
Also, try this. Put an average sized glass bottle of soft drink or even water in the freezer. Once it's frozen or at least thoroughly cold, place it on the floor, and when sitting down (obviously) roll it back and forth under the affected area. Using glass eliminates the chance of popping the can or plastic bottle open and having you think evil thoughts of this suggestion as you clean up the mess. I can attest that Mrs. C took this suggestion from her Dr. and the pain is greatly reduced or eliminated...

I'm glad you asked this because I am suffering from the same thing at the moment. It's a pain because I have to do a lot of walking being a busy mum going back and forth to my kids school all day.

At least I have an idea about what it is now.
