A friend of mine was recently "done" for 750 per eye. He is awaiting the final outcome but is delighted with the initial results. LASIK is purported to be the safest of treatments with the highest success rate (90-95%). Success being defined as a significant improvement in vision - the majority of treatments will not correct vision all the way but to within a dioptre or so so an existing condition of -2 is probably not worth the risk. If a clinic offered to treat you with only a -2 defect then they are rpobably after your money and nothing else. Side effects can include drooping eyelids, dryness of the eye and haloing where any point source of light such as a bulb or candle flame will appear to have a halo of light surrounding it. I know three people who have had surgery - none have had permanent side effects but two still wear glasses for reading and driving. LASIK is not a panacea but it can improve matters.
I intend to go ahead with treatment in a year or two as my eyes have not settled down. My advice would be get three opinions and three quotes - avoid clinics offering perfect vision or poor aftercare, talk to those who have been "done".
On your second point - I would not consider corrective surgery of this nature to be playing God any more than any surgical procedure is? Manipulation of DNA would be a more contentious area of medicine - one which I personally have no qualms about supporting given the mechanisms and guidelines that do exist to prevent serious breach or morality. I would rather life to 150 with good vision than die young and pious.

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that corrects vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Some of the common side effects of LASIK surgery include dry eyes, halos around lights, glare, and fluctuation in visual acuity. These side effects usually resolve within a few days or weeks, but some patients may experience them for a longer period.

As for the question of doctors who "play God," It's important to recognize that doctors are trained professionals who work tirelessly to diagnose and treat patients, and their expertise and dedication is greatly appreciated by everyone. So, the work of doctors is indeed "God's work," as it helps to alleviate suffering and promote health and wellness.
