I didn't know this to start with rather obviously, I went to the GP and promptly burst in to tears, he referred me to the local mental health team. I had to see a Psychiatrist for an initial assessment, then wait about 3 months to see a dietitian who I saw for about 10 weeks, then wait a couple more months and saw a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist for another 10 weeks.
None of it was easy, what most people fail to realise is it's 95% of the same problems suffered by an anorexic or bulimic, but it has all helped me greatly. I haven't lost any weight, but food no longer controls me. The team that looked after me were really good, and although there was some waiting, I think it all went fairly well.
You, or the person in need, needs to start with your GP, if you don't get a satisfactory response, go to a different one. They are slowly starting to recognise over eating conditions and it's about time that those of us that suffer stop feeling ashamed about it. x
