If I run for more than about 30 seconds my throat starts to feel red raw, my teeth & gums really really ache and I get an iron taste in my mouth. I can do other exercises (swimming, using gym equipment etc) for long periods of time with no problems but I cannot abide running because I know it will hurt so much! Whenever I explain this to anyone they think I'm balmy has anyone any idea what could be making me feel like this?! Asthma runs in my family but I only notice mine when I have a cold so not sure if this could be related or not. Has anyone ever had anything similar?

Hi Hannahjo. I get the teeth and gums thing and yes-people think I'm totally insane too. It's not so bad in summer though, and I don't get if I'm running on machine. But outside in winter-,yea god it absolutely kills! So sorry I got no solution (although I wondered if it's because I dont breathe properly-ie in through nose and out through mouth) but am interested to see you got the same problem! Will be watching to see if you get any helpful advice!

Wow! You're the first person I've ever spoken to who knows what I'm talking about!!! I'm also fine on a treadmill like you, so maybe it is something to do with sensitivity. Will have to try running with my mouth closed and see if that helps!

Thing is although I know how I'm supposed to breathe when I'm running properly (like not on a treadmill and having to actually do some proper work) I'm having a hard time breathing at all, so getting air into me slowly is not an option lol
I've had this kind of thing before, but only after I've been doing very long distances. It's certainly unpleasant but usually is an indication that I'm right at my limits and will have to stop soon. I don't know wh yyou might get it so early into a run, but at least you're not crazy!
Oh, and no asthma in my family

hmmm interesting, thanks Supernick. You say you get it when you're at your limit, so I'm wandering if I push myself to run more & more I wont start feeling like this until later on in my run...
