Let's all raise our glasses and hopes as we see the inexorable decline in standards and society and behaviour in general. In particular I would like to bid a toast to whomever set fire to Thursley Common - well done guys ! In my experience things don't just burst into flames, it takes some prat with a box of matches, or some twit with a barbecue to do it. YEARS of nature torched by your stupidity and selfishness. I hope your 4x4 broke down on the way home. I see this every year on Mitcham Common - jolly good giggle, load of anti-social thugs. Flames are fun, getting the fire brigade out in sweltering heat just so you can have a laugh is fun. Wasn't me guv. No of course it wasn't, you just happened by and spotted it.......

Quite right to Whiffey! Hear hear! everyone raise to a glass and say goodbye to standards and decency!
BLOODY SELFISH IDIOTS!!
Well said whiffey, that sort of person makes my blood boil. Why does this country seem to filling up with more and more pricks all the time?
but these people are the ones who get really upset when something happens to THEM or their property.

I was brought up to respect authority (with a healthy bit of cynisism), but after spending 25+ years with the Benefits Agency you see morons in all shapes, sizes and genders who think that the world owes them a living and that they can do what they want.

Fire is dangerous and can get out of control quickly, but they are only doing it for the 'quick fix' of fun, not considering the ramifications of their actions.

This heat is making me grumpy!!
Was it deliberate whiffey ?

In North Wales we get lots of mountain fires, Some are caused by cigarettes discarded by idiots, but some are caused by broken glass on very dry grass areas, so are you sure this was deliberate ? whatever it was it is a tragedy when places are destroyed.
Echo the sentiments posted above... used to live in that area once upon a time, and it is a real shame about the damage caused.
Some of those people will be wearing Union Flag t-shirts and saying how proud they are to be English, as they throw their empty bottles and suchlike in canals and otherwise mar and despoil this beautiful countryside. Really makes you wonder how some were brought up

Ray, I may be wrong, in which case I apologise, but I have never seen landscape catch fire all by itself.

Today cycling, home, I was stopped by a group of 'youths' wanting to borrow my mobile phone (not the usual 20p) to report a fire to the fire brigade. And that is part-cause of my anger this evening. Further up the path I found a fire scorching an oak tree. Society is failing these people, it's all our fault. Mate, as they would say.

I was watching the news earlier and there was a report about youths who are purposefully causing fires, but booby trapping them first to injure the emergency services while they stand by watching and laughing. What's happening to this country that a bunch of kids have to risk someone elses life in order to have fun? Thankfully it's a minority, but it's still a worry.
Hi whiffey, of course fires can't start on there own, I just hope some cretin did not set out to do this, we had a Fire on the mountainside near us last week, that was caused by lightning, we had another caused by the suns rays going through a broken bottle, that should not happen and if whoever left the bottle there had taken it it wouldn't have, It isn't just the Foliage either is it,how much wildlife has gone as well ? Take care, Ray
Common Sense Part 1
Subject: a death - the sad passing of Common Sense.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to
administer Panadol, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense part2.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is
survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone. If you still remember him pass this on.
If not join the majority and do nothing.

Thank you everybody. I posted this in a rage of helplessness, there have been some philosophical replies.

I like (i.e. I don't) the Passing of Common Sense - bye bye Britain, all wave as the country disappears under PC.....

Big Al1st thats brilliant, thank you
O tempora, O mores! (oh the times, oh the morals)

A fine quote from Cicero.

Amazing isn't it? 2000 years and people are still bemoaning the death of civilised values!

Every generation seems to have an amazing ability to see the death of moral values in youth and totally ignore it's own generation!

I mean when did you last find cinema seats ripped up by Teddy Boys with razor blades? Mods and Rockers in running battles along Brighton seafront? Even football holiganism is mostly drunk and disorderly rather than the organised gangs it once was.

And Arson's not exactly new you know!

There's a certain sactimonious pleasure from pursing the lips and giving out about "the youth today" but in reality the death of civilisation has been greatly exagerated!
Hi Jake, I agree with you but I think there is a distinct difference between civilisation and common sense, although I believe eventually the lack of common sense will destroy civilisation.
Common sense is one of the basic building bricks of civilisation. Destroy common sense then you will destroy all morals and eventually civilisation.
Common sense says that I should be able to protect my property but am I allowed to in practice without getting banged up and sued by the low life.
Common sense says that child rapists should be given long sentences but do they get them, and so on.
The lack of common sense and the upsurge of the PC brigade are not helping matters at all
Rgds Al
Mycats Thank you

When the teddy boys were running riot, were we facing the prospect of Sharia Law, and a country legislating against and prosecuting its own defenders ? Nowadays British bad, ANYTHING ELSE good.
I have to admit that my part of the country is still quite peaceful compared to inner city areas. The town is safe at night, it is a nice place to bring up kids etc

But every now and then somebody has to spoil it for all the rest of us. I can't say with honesty that I have NEVER broken the law, but I have never done anything to hurt anybody else. Well - I shot the cat with a water pistol, and pinched a biscuit out of my brothers fridge...

Maybe we should stop the morons from breeding, or is that against their human rights?
whiffey..you are turning into Spike Milligan, gawd rest his tortured soul.
No whiffey, we were facing IRA bombs devestating London (give or take 5 years).

We also had the Special Patrol Group roaming London picking up anybody they felt like, we had the West Midlands
Serious Crime Squad fitting up anybody they felt like.

We had Bloody Sunday in Nortern Ireland with civilian marchers being shot by paratroopers.

It's nothing new, maybe our parents were just less panicky.

As for common sense, I loathe and despise this term. It carries with it a notion that there are values and notions

that we all carry in common. It promotes lazy thinking "surely that's just common sense?" it stops us from questioning whether what we are doing is right.

It's appealed to in the gutter press knowing that they can distort facts because few people check them out - like your McDonalds coffee case.

Did you ever check that out or did you just believe what the media told you?

If you'd checked it out you'd have discoverred that the coffee was so hot woman sufferred 7 days hospitalisation and required skin grafts.

You'd also have discoverred that it wasn't the first case and McDonalds had settled several previous cases out of court and required their restaurants to serve coffee at teast 20 degrees hotter than any other restaurant.

How's your common sense doing?
