Alternatively, when I was a teenager and any of my friends phoned and he answered the phone he used to say that I was just in the middle of cleaning the toilet??? He thought this was hilarious but I didn't, the most embarrassing thing about this was not the cleaning the toliet bit but the fact that he thought it was funny. Parents, you bring them up the best you can.

I cringe when I recall my dad in Lanzarote circa 1984, pi$$ed as a fart at 1.00am trying to open his beer bottle by hooking it onto the pine bar ~ the barman had a go at him, and my dad proceeded to call him all the greasy dagos under the sun & finished off by shouting 'seeya Mowgli' as he was chucked out.
I decided to leave right at this moment, and ran ahead of him into our apartment.
I watched out of the window as he staggered along the poolside, clutching a few beer glasses & knocking over sunbeds. He fell into the pool, and was the talk of the complex the next day. It was the last holiday I went on with him...

Dad's always been really good about that sort of thing. Now that I'm in my twenties we've got a real 'wind up Mum' bond, so whenever I see them and Mum asks how it's going, I'll always tell an outrageous lie about something like having 3 one night stands in a week, and my Dad will be giggling into his pint as Mum goes on about how morally reprehensible that is. Then she'll have a go at him about not setting a good example by laughing, as I sit giggling into my pint.
My Dad never embarassed me - he was content with hating me instead but ...
when my eldest daughter was going through her 'rebel-without- a-concience' faze at fifteen, i advised her that one day I would give her more grief than she gave me.
So - the teen disco - I was instructed to collect her from round the corner, and on no account was i to come in to get her.
Not only did i march right into the crowded nightclub and yell her name at the top of my voice, along with "Time to go home now, bed time ..." I was wearing my SLIPPERS!
She was weeping with rage all the way home, especially when i told her I'd done the whole thing on purpose. She's thirty-one now, and has never forgotten it!

Sadly my dad is no longer with us but when i was 11, we went to Majorca and i really fancied the waiter. You know how it is at that age. Every time he came near us my Dad, bless him, kept dropping hints that i liked him and then on the last day he asked if he would have his picture taken with me! Obviously, i was mortified by all his behaviour! I would give anything in this whole wide world for him to embarrass me one more time though! :-(
