Why, when you have a cold with a cough, do you cough more at night than during the day?

Just a suggestion:

A cough is caused by a build up of mucus and dead cells at the back of the throat. If you are standing then gravity will carry some of this away to be digested, but lieing down means that is will just sit there and cause more irritation, hence making you cough more often.
The air is cooler and more irritable to the throat. I have found whenever i have a cough, rather than lay in bed coughing, going to sleep on the settee in front of the fire works, as the fire warms the air and makes it easier to breathe. Just my opinion.
