Following a conversation with a mate who insists vanilla is the best smell ever, it got me to wondering what others fav smells are?

I remember meat pie at school as if it were yesterday. I'm not sayimg this is my favourite... (coz I've been drinking loads) I just want it logging!

I will be posting with other smells soon!

Fresh cut grass, cucumbers in a salad, wood burning... There are so many but I've had loads to drink so I'm going to leave it at that!!!
Cinammon, - whether the real mccoy or in air fresheners, toiletries, perfumes ..... makes me all warm n cosy!
The smell of onions frying (particularly when you know they are going to accompany a nice juicy steak) takes some beating, the smell when you break the seal on a new jar of coffee. The smell of cigarette smoke on a cold day on the terraces is another I always liked for some reason.
the smell of rain on dry earth!
I always like a citrus smell. I also think the smell of petrol and nail varnish is lovely (even if it is a bad idea to sniff it).
The smell of damp nettle is very minty, and takes me back to my childhood on a farm. A newly painted creosote fence is another thing I just have to sniff - oh, and fresh bread!!
That sweet, yeasty smell of really fresh bread or the smell of my wifes unique combination of perfumes, lotions and potions.
the smell of burning leaves/wood on a cool autumn evening always reminds me of coming home from school and halloween approaching and further on xmas. Ah the world was a simpler place then ....
The smell of Lavender, or i love the smell of nail varnish !!!
Ive got to argree with Cathy. Petrol is the best smell in the world!! I would say that a close second is the smell of a cake baking in t'oven, or a nice sunday roast!
Reading through the answers, the idea occurs to me that most people probably do not have a firm favourite but instead thoroughly enjoy the sense of smell. The suggestion that a particular smell triggers a vivid recollection of something is one that I suspect most people can identify with - it certainly applies to me. There are certain curiosities about this too, for example I like the smell of freshly roasted coffee beans (or, more so, the smell of the roasting process), but I cannot stand the taste of coffee (my addiction to chocolate only just overcomes the dislike and allows me to give in to a coffee flavoured fix).
Brace yourselves - the smell that reminds me of being little, when my grandmother used to take me down to the pools near where she lived to watch the anglers is ... maggots! I really do like the smell of maggots in sawdust - but I know of no-one else who does, I guess I'm not surprised!
my favourite smell has got to be the smell of freshly washed clothes dried outside on a breezy summers day. mmmm
the dry Earth smell just before rain, as already mentioned; and that 'dope' smell in racing motorbikes.
ooh babies! especially after a nice breastfeed - all milky and warm!
smoke from dead wood burning, bacon cooking, cigars, baby's breath, baking bread, eucalyptus, salami.......... It's funny how smoke (in one form or another) features heavily in the responses - a caveman instinct?
Pear drops.
Castrol R.
Right, I'm back and a little more sober!

Reading through these answers it's amazing how some people love the smell of certain things which others hate... I used to love the smell of nail varnish but detest the smell of petrol. I love the smell of kippers being cooked but I think they're more trouble than they're worth, (taking out all the bones then they repeat on you all day!

Although I don't eat a lot of chocolate, whenever I do, I have to smell it first...mmmmm...

Freshly laundered clothing is definitely one of my faves as well as the rain on earth which has been mentioned a couple of times. Baby lotion and almost any soap is a smell from heaven for me. I also love the smell of onions being cooked slowly and then garlic and ginger being added to the pan... Delicious!
