a couple of nights ago i was lying in bed, and all of a sudden i got cramp in my calf and it hurt so bad i was nearly crying, my muscle was sticking out like id been training for a bloody year. now iv got a really bad pain where i had cramp.
so my question is how is cramp caused? i no its through too much excercise but i didnt do any excercise to trigger it of. thanks SSx
Morning Sam :-) Drink lots of water before you go to bed. I used to get it all the time and more when I've been drinking through dehydration. I've also been told tonic water is good and more salt in your diet. I haven't had it lately because I tend to not stetch in my sleep. This is often the cause as if you sleep with your legs bent the muscle accomodates itself to that and if you wake and suddenly stretch it stretches the muscle in the back of the leg too soon. so just try to slowly straighten your legs out.
Tell me about it I used to scream my lungs out and usually end up rolling off the bed. Because no matter how hard you try relax it to stop the burning you cant. Do you think maybe you're my doppleganger?
confirming that tonic water is excellent to replace lost salt, that can cause cramp. Hubby dehydrated on plane trip once, and the docs all suggested he drank plenty as it contains quinine...
Next time it happens (let's hope not - but if) try to twiddle your toes forcibly, so you are stretching your foot - it is difficult sammy, given that your leg is extremely painful, but it will speed up the muscle easing...
Oh I have had the same and woken up screaming ... someone told me the trick is to point your foot directly up to the ceiling and it will stop and it does seem to work but takes some courage ! The pain in my calf lasts for about a week afterwards. I find it is worse in hot weather.
