Unusual Names

I have also put this in parenting as wasn't sure where it should go. I am 5 momths pregnant and trying to come up with babies names. So far have a few for boys but no girls name. The problem is, my name is so unusual that I have never met or heard of anyone with my name. I like being unique and want my child to have a fairly unusual name that isn't too common also but am struggling. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Also, it is hard as I don't want anything too out there or something that is fashionable just for now. Do you know what I mean??

HI I have an unusual name and have forever had to spell it and pronunce it. It's Aileen (A-leen) it's gaelic and I often get called Eileen which I hate sorry to all those eileens out there!!!

My friend is having the same trouble. I love 2nd names as first names such as Mackenzie, Crombie and Campbell.

How about Alenka? Yes...thats my name - I love having one completely different to everyone else, and everyone recognizes it! Its Polish, (however, i am not). I think the correct way of spelling it is Elenka, how most people i know pronounce it. Except my parents decided to be different even more it spell it with an A. X X X

Two little Greek girls I met while living out there a few years ago, Irini (the letter i's were pronounced as in the word 'is', i-r-ee-ni emphasising the ee and Eleni (Ell-en-y) emphasising the en.

Also, just thought of a couple more girls names, a little girl at my sons nursery is called Adrianna and I know a very pretty dark haired and dark eyed girl called Annika (and not once have i thought of Annika Rice!!!- I added that coz I thought other people might.)

A very rare name, only two people I know that have it anywhere, is that of Onjella or Anjella ( pronounced on-Yell-a, or An-jella ), Holleagh ( pronounced holl-lee, some thing you can add is an A at the end and it becomes, holl-lee-a) Chandra Rayne, Shawnalee, these are just a few different ones, best of luck to you and yours to come.

PS: I should have told you my good friend's named her daughter, Temperance Faith ....that was over21 years ago...and her other daughters were named Nova Dawn and Dorleathia ( Door-lee-THEEETH-a ) Raye.

As for boys, what about combining two male family members names. Our son was given his grand-fathers names to avoid any arguments, and to honour the 2 men.

I love either Jonah or Logan for a boy or Robyn or Cadence for a girl. All heard of but not too common. My niece is Mia but I think that's getting very common.

shanya.... i thought shania twain was shanya, an I considered this as a name , but then called her Jodiexx If I had known that Shanya wasnt a name I would have probably called her that.

i have a cousin with four girls (and one boy) and she gave them some unusual names (first and middle) including Tealah, Marina and Odessa. Once the baby comes along and you get used to the name, anything fits I think. Though the acid test for me would be how does it sound when you call it out - some names just sounds dreadful when you shout them and should always be avoided!

Naming your children is very tricky.
My name is maori and I am constantly asked where it is from or misheard and called Julie. Most people can't remember what it was next time I see them.
I called my daughter Cassie which is pretty normal but no matter how carefully I say it a lot of people say Hello Cathy'.
All in all introducing us as a family can be a lengthy process.
Worth bearing in mind.
