we didn't evolve from apes. We had a common ancestor. Some of its descendants evolved into apes, others became humans.

If an organism develops a mutation that gives it a greater advantage over the rest of its kind will it always out-compete it's un-mutated relatives so that they become extinct? If not what are the critea that would allow them to co-exist?
