I am obviously ginger or I wouldn't be addressing this, yes people say to me, oh but you're more aubern or red, but I am ginger. I want to educate people who arn't ginger as to the damaging nature of their comments. Not for me (I'm 42 and can cope with it) BUT I get increasingly angry when a lot of things now, due to the PC attitude can't be joked about (even Trevor McDonald tonite was defending the Kazastans) and yet ginger can be ridiculed at any time of the day by anyone. As I said, I can cope and joke but I'm bored of it. I have been approached by at least 5 sets of parents whose children have ginger hair and are 6 or 7 year old kids who are being teased or ridiculed because of this, and obviously doing this to ginger haired people is an OK thing to do. I haven't space here to tell you two experiences I have had so I'll put them in a first answer. I hope the adults out there realise how daft it is to talk about "gingers" as if they are a different race, who don't deserve respect. I have black friends & relatives who have had similar experiences as children, but thankfully their's has been dealt with.

I would love to meet ward minter, as his words make so many feel brave, but I challenge him on the glasses and big noses bit, that was the 70's and fat (no-one dare mention) t's only ginger ridicule that isn't frowned open. Gay? cool and accepted by the people who don't have a problem with ginger. I work with teenagers who express their experiences of either lesbian or gay or bisexual feelings and despair etc, which is why they get to see me. No-one should be put out to judge. There hasn't been a question about glassses,fat people or big noses. That would be frowned upon.

We have (all my family - i'm not taking the blame) taken the p*ss. He - my uncle - couldn't give a sh*it. But he's good looking (I don't think so) the ladies luv him... : () Why?

Seriously Unmmm ask your uncle if ginger hair has affected his life, and in what way. I'm interested, my cousin with ginger hair is a Boris becker stud lookalike, but at school it was a different story.

Forget the ginger now, the very debate and thinking about it will make you think twice, I've already "lectured" my 20 colleagues about the TV bit, and they have said to me that they honestly think that Ginger is ridiculed in a lot of the most watched programmes, since I pointed it out. How old are your three kids Ummmm? just in case we have anything in common.

Out of interest, why do people call ginger, "red" when it so obviously nothing like red, ginger is ginger, a post box is red I have yet to see anybody with natural hair the colour of a post box or any shade with red in it.

I'm not having a go, just wondered why or how it came about. Why not just be proud and say "yes my hair is ginger"

There are different shades of red..pillar box red is just a shade!

Titian runs in my family ~ every shade of it from dark auburn shades to carrot. It's a lovely colour and grey streaks blend in so well :o)

Wardy ~ was Bowie born ginger, or did he just have a penchant for henna?

RATTER I think it's because they think ginger is a derogative term, which just actually makes the situation worse, they think they are giving you compliments by not referring to you as ginger, when it's blatently obvious that you are, and the fact that they won't say the word, makes it a word that they perceive as an insult, hence we instantly get the measure of what they think about ginger hair! Oh and many thanks to Ummmm I really enjoyed my rant last night, the result of a hard weeks work challenged into the wrong area, but it worked anyway.
