Non smokers lungs
10 Answers
I gave up smoking about 2 months ago but now when i go to pub/clubs etc i get a cough...that lasts for days and black boogers (sick i know). I never had this when i smoked and it seems that my lungs are weaker now than they were when i smoked. Will this last? I hope not! Do all non smokers have these probs?

I had this when I first stopped smoking, and one tonsil would swell alarmingly.
When you were smoking your lungs and passages were coated with all nasty stuff that is now clearing. Smokey atmosphere agitates your newly sensitive lungs and tries to clear it all, loosening yet more of the old muck.
This is all good, believe it or not! It will stop all together soon, so stick with it.

Its just all the tar you took in when you were smoking.
I too remember who grim it is. I rememember continually getting colds after I gave up my 20+ habit a day and generally feeling pretty crap so much so I thought smoking was a better option!
Seven years down the line, my lung function has drastically inproved.
Just be patient and keep up the good work!

stick with it , if you start again you will have to do those two months all over again to stop. I had the same problem when I stopped 6 years ago , my doctor explained that my lungs were starting to work properly again and clearing all the crap I had put into them over the years (they couldn't do this while I smoked).Believe me it will get better and after a while you will wonder how you could have ever smoked in the first place.
KEEP IT UP...GOOD LUCK.

Keep with it justasking - the other comments are quite true. I smoked for 31 years and stopped five years ago. I remember the amount of muck and crud that came up in the first 2 months, so you are not experiencing anything unusual. I remember it stopped after about 2 months - but then I had another episode for a week about 7 months later. Obviously it took that long for the deep-seated gunge to work loose.
God, doesn't it sound horrible? I find it hard to believe I ever did that now and I hope you will be the same too if you stick with it. I will warn you that pubs and clubs seem to be danger points for smokers and many seem to go back to smoking after a night out. I was fortunate in that I have never been a drinker, but I think it's due to drink and smoking going together. There is also the fact that your defences drop somewhat after several drinks.
Stick with it justasking. In a few months you will feel a completely different person and you will wonder where all the money in your bank account came from. Most ex-smokers find it hard to believe they spent what they did on smoking. Good luck!

Ethel is right!
I stopped smoking a couple of years ago and still find I am very sensitive to smokey atmospheres. Soon after I gave up I developed a terrible cough ~ especially in smokey areas. Your body is doing a good job in getting rid of anything nasty, and it will settle down soon.
Try and steer clear of smoke ~ a lot of places have already banned smoking, so you don't need to lose out socially :o)
If you are still worried, visit your GP..they will help to put your mind at rest.
