Today my little brother was taken to A&E because his daycarer shut his thumb in the door (accidently), and his nail has come off. At the hospital, the nurse said it's likely his thumb nail will never grow back.

I'm now worried that when he starts school he will be bullied because of it. Is this likely?

Hey if my big toe nail can grow back after losing it a few months ago at my age, surely a young lads thumb nailcan, sounds odd to me.

Well she said it wasn't just the nail that had come off, but the bed? or something.. which is under the skin and not visable..?

oh well that may be a different issue, if so then you should sue the daycarer. was this in your home or at a nursery?

Why do you think he will get bullied because his thumb got trapped in the door?

surely this would be a confidence thing regarding doors/carer etc, i can't see how you can read into him being bullied?

because he won't have a thumb nail... I don't know what school's like these days but when I was at school, even having freckles meant you were bullied. he's only 1 and a half.

The carer is a family friend and it's clear it was an accident, she cares for 2 or 3 other toddlers at her house. Sueing isn't an option and not something my mum or stepdad want to go through.

Hello loukr, i have a friend who is now 14/15 who's thumb nail came off when he was little (it wasnt actually the whole of it but alot, and it never grew back fully).

It never affected him, i think he actually used to show off about it!

I wouldn't worry but keep an eye out for him, you know what some kids are like.

loukr nurses talk a lot of **** sometimes, did the doctor confirm what she said?

well I didn't go I was only told about everything when my mum got in with my brother. As far as I know the doctor gave a second opinion and his was then same..

No offence, but if you think that he will be bullied due to having no thumb nail, thats very very negative to think that way, your little brother will be absolutely fine when he goes to school, granted you get the odd ar$eholes who think there on a higher pedestal by throwing insults, but this has gone on for many many a year, you will have to deal with it {if ever it happens} at that given time, as long as you nip things like this in the butt at an early stage, there will not be a problem

What, so it's unusual that a big sister is worried about her brother? I just know what kids can be like and it's not very nice.

bambibooboo, hopefully my wife won't ever look after you then {shes a nurse} and an extremely good one at that.
For the record, the majority of the time ''Junior doctors'' would deal with this sort of accident, and guess what bambibooboo, they ask the nurse for there opinion.

noone is going to notice that, fat, freckles, ginger or the kid that smelt of wee maybe but no thumbnail ~ I cant imagine it. They might go urghh when he points it out.

theres nothing wrong with looking after you little brother, i just think your getting a little ahead of yourself in thinking he will be bullied

I chopped a load of my little finger off in a door hinge when i was little and it grew back kinda (via a tumor I had to have removed) but still looks different, shorter with more of a claw than a nail which grows freakily long about 5 times as quick as the others.

I was never bullied, I forget about it most of the time. People do notice but ask out of curiosity more than anything. I was never bullied about it.

My dad lost (bizarrely the same) little finger in an accident with a hedge strimmer. They couldn't save it. He's a teacher and scares all the kids with stories about the triads and such lol.

I think if anything it will be a talking point, a bit like a girl i went to school with who had 2 toes joined together. We all went "yuk" and kept asking to look at it but she was quite fascinating to us as kids! i dont think for one minute that he would get buliied because of it!

'Sue the daycarer'!!!!!! When will people get over it in to their heads that accidents happen. I very much doubt this will have any financial impact on the little boy and it isn't like the carer did it on purpose so why makes everyones life a misery but trying to claim a couple of hundred quid compo.

and the kids at school will probably think think its some gross but equally as cool party piece. Just don't make a big deal out of it and he won't care about it either.
