please indulge me this rant, i have a young son who works very hard, just over a year ago he bought his first car , a nippy wee golf g t i . he is not a boy racer would never drink and drive and insured, always willing to assist with transport if he could. 2 days ago his car was taken from outside his workplace in a busy city centre in broad daylight, he had recently upgraded his sound system at great cost.. the insurance company have offered him 2000 pound less than he expected to get if he had sold his car, his attitude has been and i know for my sake so i wont be too upset is to say worse things could happen. upshot is we as a family will be without transport over the xmas ant new year , so my question is is this the xmas spirit than i am sooooo very angry at whoever took his car? thanks.

Hmmm, i dont think it would matter what time of year they took the car. you would still be angry, and have every right to. I dont understand, you say he is insured and everything. Why cant he get a courtesy car until the matter has been resolved? I know how annoyed you must feel, now that you will have to walk, but he will feel a lot worse than you, believe me...

thats bloody awful news crete and your quite right to rant about it , I would be ranting at the insurance folks for a courtisy car and ranting at the cops to find the old one.

they are offering him the book price and he is not insured for a curtesy car and yes mrb i know he is upset and dont be concerned we will not need to walk thanks for you concern.

insurance companies offers when a car has been stolen or written off are always low as Im sure they know the insured is desperate to get back on the road!
Ask the insurers to provide details of cars with similar spec at the price that they have offered. better still, go armed with details of cars like the one he had, get the price from a glasses guide or parkers of the sale price by a dealer. Then get them to look at the offer again!

Dont let the theives ruin your xmas and dont let the insurers take away the chance of a decent replacement car.

you wont get a coutesy car if the car is written off or stolen usually as the claim is usually settled promptly by insurers

Haggle with the insurers. When the wife's car was written off, she eventually negotiated a 25% better offer than their first.

I don't know why there are such pathetic useless pieces of trash on this Earth. Can't be bothered to get a job and work hard to buy their own things and have to steal someone elses who's obviously worked hard for it. I'm sorry for your son crete and hope this doesn't completely spoil the Christmas time for you. He sounds like he's trying to put a brave face on it too for your family.

A friend of ours hes only 19 has bought his car working in a pub in the evenings as well as his regular day job. In the last 2 months his car has been broken into twice - first time stole his stinky gym kit off the back seat (lesson never leave anything in your car on view) second time stole the stereo system. Of course windows broken and vandalism.

Makes me mad!!!!!!!!

Sympathies - these kids pay a fortune for insurance - and yes I know its usually the young lads who have accidents - but still my son has paid over �2k for his insurance and hes 18. My other lad had his new moped that he bought himself nicked and wrecked. Then he got knocked off the moped we got to replace it. He's lost a lot of money on it and its easy to say negotiate but it never seems to work in our case - we always seem to get the poo-y end of the stick. So I really sympathise - all the hassle of sorting it out, inconvenience of being without a car and lose money into the bargain.

Well all I can say is SH1t happens, and always to the good ones. Sometimes I think I might turn to the devil coz them people seem to get so much more than the hard working people do. My car got broken into and they damaged the door so bad it was gonna cost more than my car :-( so it was written off, then my next car got reversed into. Always been someone elses fault. Makes me angry too. But chin up :-)

Sickening isn't it? I know how you feel. Some yrs ago I heard someone revving my son's car in the middle of the night & I jumped out of bed just in time to see them drive it away. I felt so sick & helpless & I had to wake him to let him know.
The car was found but with damage (obviously) & a trail of petrol leading to it which they'd obviously intended to ignite but hadn't, for whatever reason.
My son couldn't bear to be in it afterwards & tidied it up & sold it.

Another time I heard my ex boyfriends car start up in the middle of the night and he looked out window and sure enough it was his, he ran out across all his gravel in his ponts baseball bat in hand (how he thought he�d catch up I don�t know). I rang police and for once they were there straight away, we listened to there radios as the located him and followed him and eventually stopped him. So sometimes they do actually get caught and this one got put away. Sad thing was it was a friend that my ex had got a job when he came out of prison the first time.

crete, Tell him not to accept the first offer, this happened with my son when somebody smashed into his car and didn't stop, we managed to get an extra �400 from them in the end I know it's not a fortune but when they work so hard for what that have it all helps, it is bl00dy annoying, and these idiots that nick the cars are rarely caught, hope they come up with a better offer to him, good luck.

It's a miserable thing to do, and sadly the thieves were almost certainly on drugs since the majority of theft and burglary crimes these days are drug-related. Sadly the only advice one can give these days is never ever put expensive sound or satellite navigation equipment in any car as it is simply asking to be stolen. Also, never leave anything else on display either. I'm sorry all your Christmas plans have been ruined, and I'm sorry for your son too who must be sadly disillusioned.
