The best type of therapy for helping with self-esteem or anxiety/general stress is probably Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It concentrates on dealing with negative thought patterns that affect the way you look at things and helps you to try and change them to more positive and helpful ones. It is very "hands-on" and practical, not too much dwelling on the past etc, and has been found in many trials to be very effective in only a comparitively short time. You would probably need to be refered by your GP. If you want to see a counsellor, try and make sure they are accedited by the BAC (British Association of Counsellors). You may have to pay as the waiting list for counsellors can be long, and often patients with acute problems such as depression are prioritised by the NHS. It is money well spent though. Good luck.
