Man Flu
15 Answers
I was suffering last week with a cold, which some of the girls in the office referred to as man flu. This morning two of them have phoned in sick with 'flu' which, of course, means they've got colds, probably from me.
So, when I've got a cold and come in to work they rib me about it being 'man flu', yet when they've got colds, they wimp out and stay at home referring to it as flu. Oh the wonderful irony.
Should I take the high ground and lavish them with sympathy when they come in tomorrow, or should I take the p155?

I am not saying that these girls aren't stretching the truth somewhat but I had the flu last week and it was the proper one!! I've already had two bouts of the cough and cold in December but last week i had a god awful fever!!! I was laid up in bed for 2 days sweating my arse off and then freezing my t**s off 5 minutes later!! I was aching so much my legs felt like they'd run a marathon.! Now its just turned back into the good old cough and cold again so I am back at work!! But the real flu is out there and I am the proof!! It was bl00dy hell!

The stupid thing is that in all likelihood none of you are suffering from 'flu at all, but just bad colds. Flu is debilitatin to the point where it lays you out flat for at least a week and takes several more to recover fully. It's actually quite serious.
'Man 'flu', on the other hand, like 'bird flu', is worse than a cold, but not so bad as 'proper' 'flu. The former is characterised by the sufferer's delusion that he is either dead or will be so within a couple of days, such is the seriousness of his condition. Sufferers of the latter know they aren't dying, but feel compelled to remind everyone else how hard they continue to work despite their suffering - of which they also like to remind non-sufferers. Those girls at your work, flip-flop, may be taking time off, but they'll be working very hard catching up on the daytime soaps, and will tell you all about it when they get back.

Children get colds, men get 'flu and women get on with it.
Anyone who has had "real" 'flu (and I've had it twice) will tell you that anybody who comes into work (or is even still standing) does not have 'flu.
It is a debilitating, strength sapping disease, disabling the sufferer entirely for 24-48 hours, and leaving them decidedly poorly for a few days after that. You cannot go to work, you cannot walk around, and, during its worse phase, you cannot even get out of your pit. Every joint in your body aches and you simply want to curl up and die.

Lore - I didn't have Man Flu, I had a cold. Two girls in the office, who described my cold as man flu, have phoned in sick this morning with "flu" - or in other words, a cold.
I just love the irony that they were ribbing me at work last week when I had a cold and they were calling it man flu (as in men are wusses and never get colds they only ever have flu - even though I wasn't particularly complaining), yet when they get a cold, they phone in sick and refer to it as flu.
I just think it is brilliant - and I've decided I'm far too much of a child not to miss a p155 taking opportunity like this.

man flu is just an ordinary cold that some men have to embellish and treat as though it is the plague, to excuse their whimpering.
you really should not have gone into work with an infectious illness - it is not brave or soldiering on - it is selfish and makes other people ill, so it is thanks to you that these two women are ill...but what if one of them has asthma? or a frail elderly relative, or children to pass it on to?
a healthy young man or woman may be able to brush off a cold, but for many it can turn into something much more serious.

Joko - yep, I'm always in two minds about this one: a day in bed can do wonders for a cold and may stop you infecting anybody else.
On the other hand, a common cold doesn't stop one from working and, certainly in my place of work, it is frowned upon by those on high if you call in sick with a cold.
So we are stuck between a rock and a hard place!
Incidentally, both girls are in this morning - whilst they both have red sore noses and don't look great, it has to said that has to be a new record for flu recovery.
