Thinking back to when I was in my early 20's & having an 'off' day - I was putting some make-up on & said to my older & wiser sister "Oh Flo, I look really yucky today", she replied "I think you're standng too close to the mirror darling".
It's something I've always remembered & tried not to scrutinise myself too much after that.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder & those silly blokes were very silly beholders!
Shakespeare expressed a similar sentiment in Love's Labours Lost, 1588:
Good Lord Boyet, my beauty, though but mean,
Needs not the painted flourish of your praise:
Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye,
Not utter'd by base sale of chapmen's tongues
Benjamin Franklin, in Poor Richard's Almanack, 1741, wrote:
Beauty, like supreme dominion
Is but supported by opinion
