its not exactly a problem. if i am bored or waiting for something, i'll quite often find myself just counting in my head. Not actually counting anything, just thinking " ONE ...TWO...THREE...FOUR" etc

no mine is def counting objects wether it b be flowers, tiles, paving slabs, spots stripes squares ect.
i'm aware of it, but cant stop.
No but I see numbers as a gender
Wont it just be a form of OCD, if its not causig you any harm I wouldnt worry over it xx
Ms carrust has the same problem. She'll count stripes on a carpet, cars coming the other way when she's stuck in a traffic jam. She even counted the steps going up the viewing tower at the Imperial War Museum...161.

I just count the dreadful records that Cliff Richard has produced lol.
I think generally we all suffer from some mild forms of OCD in our own quirky little ways. I sometimes find myself avoiding pavement cracks! It only really becomes a problem when it takes over your day to day existence, or affects your life in general.

thanks octavius , just did the test and guess what

COMPUTER SAYS NO.

by the way your username contains 8 letters
I do it too
Also when I think of a word or a name like you I work out how many letters in that name and also I do a mental thing with each letter working out how many times I would have to press a mobile phone to get that letter, I mentally envisage texting words or typing them. (I type for a living)
I'm glad i'm not the only one cliffsweb!
I also do this, i just can't help myself. & even when i've counted things & whatever it is is still there, i will start counting all over again!
I count stairs - count your own, you'd be surprised how many houses have 13. There are 13 in my house so I have declared one a mini-landing by putting a cuddly Eeeyore on it. 78 at work.

p.s. Octavius, what with bad stuff going on in my life, the only other post I have made today (as whiffey anyway ;-))was in Food and Drink, about Bolognese sauce.

And Cliff is fantastic - anybody heard 'Reflections' ?
I often remember phone numbers only by the "pattern" they make on the keypad -

such as a smile is 1,5, 3 and a frown is 426
a square is 4 5 8 7 (or wherever on the pad)
thin L is 2589 and thick L is 1456, Y is 1538

in any order.

etc etc - you get the picture - however i only use those terms if i am trying to recall a number, while away from a keypad, to write it on a piece of paper - usually when actually dialling i just "see" an unamed shape and move my fingers in the right shape and "routine"

My nutty thing is shapes and colours - and whether they're male or female, happy or sad, bad or good - for instance a red sqare would be male and happy - a green circle would be female and caring - but a purple triangle would be female and v nasty. Have I just gone a step too far... ?
i know exactly what you mean, i do it too, on amd off, the problem is the more you want to stop, the more you do it, but i find it goes for a while then comes back
No ... but there's 194 letters in your question, in case you hadn't counted them.
curly, you need to write things down. I used to count the stairs at work every day, until one day I got a different answer from the previous day. This was so serious that I got a notepad, went back to the ground floor, and re-ascended, making notes and subtotals on the way, e.g. second floor - patch of flaking paint, third floor - decorating disaster. I keep the notes on my desk so now I don't have to count them ever again, I can just look up the answer.
hello whiffey, i find that i will count the books in the bookcase, whilst watching tv, or pictures anything, i know how many there are, as i've counted them a thousand times, or i'll count them, say 1 2 3 4 5, then start again, until the last book finishes on a 5,
OK then, how many words are there in Trollope's "Orley Farm" ? And how much do you care ? It's a bloody boring book, not with a decent love plot like A Tale of Two Cities or Jane Eyre, nor does it have the cloister fantasy of Barchester Towers, a far far better book than I have ever read.
lol, i also count points and edges on a sofa, shelves, and used to count buses on the roundabout out me flat window in elephant and castle, 16 was the most at any one time,

i'm just weak and cant help it............
