Yes, it's called a cawl and folklore has it that it is very lucky.
First i've heard of this one, (i'm Jewish), although that doesn't mean to say that some might.

Might she be mixing it up with babies born in the caul, legend has it that these babies will never drown in the sea, this legend is widespread throughout Europe.
great minds think alike netibiza.
Trouble is- they don't spell alike - ooops I did wonder if it should have been a u!
Sounds amazing! i hope that it's true, doesn't sound like it'd be very common. I choked on the placenta when I was born, i take it that means the opposite?
neti & Lonnie are correct..although I have never heard of it being connected to the Jewish faith before.

Not being a father, I was fascinated by this thread as I have never heard of caul. However, having seen the above photo, I am of the belief that I never will be a father!!!

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED.
PS It appears cawl (with a "W") is a Welsh soup.
So Lonnie, did they chew it off or cut it off!!
Looking at joe T L post, I hope your friends child has a luckier life than birth! Its just nature, and that child is already lucky to be alive, I have no religious faith, and would not mock others for having one, but I believe that in the olden days people would have thought you were lucky to survive that.
my great grandfather was born with a cawl,it was considered very lucky, and it was said you would never die from drowning, they kept it pickled in a jar as someone told them that sailors would pay big money for them?
Ahh, that explains why all the sailors I know are cradle snatchers..
I once read that sailors used to carry dried cawls with them on their journeys.
Well I am proud to say I have learn something from Answerbank, I've never heard of this before. Thank you all!

Cheers!
Well said Ratter, lol
