elaborate names and poorness..?
60 Answers
I recently read that a report has found that the poorer an area, the more elaborate and invented the names become.
Parents somehow feel that by making a name up or spelling it oddly makes their child 'special' - they feel that it is the one thing they can give them, and some believe it may help their future.
it is evident in poor areas of america, which names like shaniqua, tinashqua, nesheekita, lateeshqua etc etc
and perhaps in the uk with names like chardonnay, chantelle-marie, etc
odd spellings like Karell, mishell, teena, jewely, etc
what do you think?
do you think this is true - that they do this, perhaps even subconsciously, or is it just an environment/trend thing and they just do it to be like the neighbours etc?

it is clear you are missing the point with this post.
in your ''know it all'' arrogance, you have chosen to take some kind of personal slight at the mention of the results of a survey.
of course people change their names, use unusual ones etc all over the world and in any classes - i was merely pointing out the results of the survey and asking what people thought of it - i did not ask for some historical lesson of how some writer spelt his name - and your puerile dig about that speaks volumes about you.
these results have not been invented - it has come from searching birth records and speaking to the parents of these kids - if the thought of a survey bringing up some result you are unhappy with horrifies you so much - tough - i don't care... the facts remain.
you seem to assume that because one person does something, so do all - welll they don't - for every person who chooses a name in defiance of slavery there are a 100 who choose it because it is pretty, or it's the name of a celebrity, or they read it in a book or simply just made it up!
And i did not say anyone was stupid at all - don't put words in my mouth.
in my experience the average 17 year old cares more for britney spears than history.
and i have not mentioned chavs, and you mentioned blacks first- therefore you made that assumption, not me.
By 'they' i meant poor people - from anywhere - that's not hard to comprehend it is?
I could list them in every sentence but i assumed people would read it and understand that simple thing.
why the hell should i research shakespeares name?
you mentioned him!
He is irrelevant in this issue - this is about modern times, but your harping on about historical issues just shows you have not understood.
your petulance is astounding - i did

Maybe you should reread your first response to my question and then you will see what a defensive, arrogant response really is. Also, from your past posts, you come across as an academically elitist snob.
You have over-reacted by insulting me on a personal level and I think that you come across as childish with your 'don't care' primary school remarks...don't care whether I am on here etc, etc. I really don't care about you either...are you bullying me in your attempt to seem popular on AB?
The reasons behind my use of the word 'black' is that you have given one paragraph using names and inflections predominantly used by the black community. But I don't really feel that I should have to justify myself anyway.
You don't give any proper figures for your cr@appy survey and to be honest it has not enhanced discussion within AB. I seriously don't want to be on AB any more, and this is partly to do with the sex1st rubbish too, I don't want my family subjected to this form of aggression and bullishness
