A friend is getting married in Gretna Green.

Having searched endlessly I have found that for 2 adults and a child, the trip would (including travel & accom) cost around �400 for the weekend.

Out of interest I priced up the same weekend and found we could go to Rome � a place close to my own heart - for a long weekend for �450.

If they are really close friends I would choose the wedding ~ it will *hopefully* only happen once for them and they obviously think a lot of you to invite you to help celebrate their day. I know when we married a couple of years ago I was very choosy with the guest list as it all costs money!

Seriously? �400 for a weekend in Scotland? I think that maybe the local hoteliers are cashing in on the Gretna bonanza.

If you drive up yourself, and stay outside the town (or is it a village?) I'm damn certain you can do it for a fraction of the cost.

Thinking about it when we went to a wedding in Gretna last year we stayed in Lockerbie ~ not that far away from Gretna.

Have you had a look at the 'Kings Arms' hotel in Lockerbie?

I got married in Gretna and none of my family paid anything like that to stay with us!
There is a days inn just off the motorway! Thats a cheap alternative! Also on the eve of my wedding, we stayed at a b and b just outside Gretna and it was about �25.00 for the night! Very nice it was too! You dont have to spend a lot.

couldn't you pitch a tent on the green? Save lots. Also you could eat turnips if you found any growing there.

It is a school friend of my wife�s.

I do not wish to afford the broken flying crockery at the mere mention of �camping� to Mrs O. I love it, she doesn�t � Baby O probably wouldn�t be too bothered.

My point is, that it is so darned expensive to go anywhere within the UK. Yes, obviously hotels and B&Bs cash in, but to get a train to Carlisle? I looked at us all flying up to Newcastle and hiring a car which together (plane+car) was cheaper than the train (sod the carbon footprint eh).

Mrs O will probably end up �encouraging� us to go as a family to the wedding. I suppose Rome can wait a bit. Thanks for the hotel links, I will have a peek.

I do agree with you Octavius.

I looked at booking a week down in Devon during July (the only time Mr P can take time off). In a caravan with Haven it is going to cost �950 just for the accommodation.

For that I can book flights for us all to Finland to visit my father in law..and his summer cottage will be free. We will also have change to spare :o)
