Since owning a digital camera I have noticed several photos with the odd ball of misty light of various sizes on them, a friend said they were spiritual orbs, I have to admit I wanted to laugh. Since taking some photos in a notorious haunted public house I have had lots of interest in some of the shots of these orbs from a ghost society. Are they all mad or is there an element of truth in their assumptions of ghostly goings on? (I suppose it helps if you believe in that sort of stuff).

To get back to the actual question - its not so much digital cameras that get lots of these but small cameras with the flash close to the lens (it just so happens that digital cameras have got smaller due to not having to accomodate a roll of film)
I'm betting that all your photos with "orbs" in are taken with flash . . . . what happens is that the flash lights up anything a couple of inches in front of the lens, and its not uncommon for dust to be floating about there (imagine a projector beam in a dark room, there are dust motes about all the time) and when the flash hits these, you get this effect. Larger cameras don't get them as the flash doesn't light this area up

I'm guessing you have a smallish camera with the flash quite close to the lens and you also get that 'red eye' effect with it?
I'm afraid these cameras produce these things all the time and its only the flash reflecting off stuff floating in the air a couple of inches in front of the lens - if you think of a projector beam in a dark room and all the stuff you see floating in it, that's all it is - they look like round blobs because they are out of focus from being too close to the lens.Bigger cameras, or ones with the flash away from the lens simply don't get them because the flash can't light up that area a couple of inches in front of the lens.
The web is full of sites proclaiming that they are spirits and claiming to see faces in them, but its all wishful thinking from people who are not too hot on photography, don't ask too many questions and certainly, in my experience, do not want any answers!
