Check yourself

For males and females, do you check yourself regularly for lumps etc? The reason I ask is that a male friend of mine has just been told he has testicular cancer. Luckily they think they have caught it early enough and he should be ok but he is gutted because he prided himself on regularly checking and is shocked that he missed the lump which now seems really obvious to him.
Are you confident that you check yourself thoroughly or do you not bother checking at all? Do you know what to look out for?

yes I do and even showed my mate how to do it other week when she thought she had a lump.

Hi helli, hope you are well, wish people would realise just how important it is, trouble with a lot of men is,they are scared to do it, also to all you ladies it need not even be a lump, my wife just noticed her breast felt "Different" no lump, no blemish,nothing just did not feel right to her, i could not see or feel any difference, thank god the Dr listened to her and sent her for checks as she was to young for regular screening, and she was right it was cancer, she had to have a mastectomy, and chemo, followed by five years of tamoxifen, but she is ok now, so please do follow hellis advice, all of you. yes i always check myself and then get my fiance to double check and vice versa

Ray, what a frightening experience for you both!!, so glad she is OK now.

I regularly check my testicles and have done for many years, if I find anything I'm not happy with I would be straight at the Dr's

A friend of mine died last year from breast cancer at 43 yrs old, so I always check about once a month.
She made the mistake of knowing that a lump was there and hoping it would go away...and she was a nurse! Her death has affected all of us women and serves as a reminder that life is very fragile and we need to do all we can to preserve it at all costs.

Yep-it's so important tht we take care of ourselves, given how common cancer is right now, and I think the first step is knowing your body, so regular checks can help you determine whether something has changed.
Sorry about your loss, Le Chat, so young too-that must have hit you all hard.

Hi Helliebobs.

I was diagnosed with it 4 years ago and caught it at its early stage. I had it removed and have gone on to father a wonderful little girl as well as one on the way, due in Novemeber. Tell your friend it will all be ok. I checked myself regularly and then all of a sudden there it was. Nothing could be done except the removal of it. The earlier you catch it, the better chance you have of it not spreading. I underwent 2 weeks of intensive radiotherapy afterwards as a precaution to ensure it hadn't spread.

Went for a scan 6 months afterwards and was given the all clear

Such was the shock to myself and my mates at the time, they are forever fiddling and checking themselves out!!

Tell your friend not to worry and you don't need two balls! One worked for me!...........You do have the option of have a pretend one fitted as well after the op.
