I'm aware I'm probably opening a can of worms with this post, but still...

There's an article in a magazine i read today about a mother who lets her 7 year old Daughter learn pole dancing. In the town where she lives they run a class calle "Pole Brats" teaching kids from 6-17 how to do pole dancing. The woman who runs the group says there's nothing sexual about it, and she blames strip clubs for placing a stigma on pole dancing, and that those kind of clubs shouldn't exist. She insists its just a fun way for kids to get fit.

The article in question carries a picture of the 7 year old, admittedly dressed in respectable pink shorts and a vest top, with the pole between her legs in a pose that would be considered quite seedy if it were an adult woman in skimpy shorts.

SO my question is this, do you think its a bad idea for little girls to do pole dancing - does it promote paedophilia, as some people have suggested, or is it really just harmless fun?

you gotta be kidding, over my dead body would i let my little girl do that, thats terrible.Wouldnt the little girls preffer to do more kiddy stuff. This i feel is strictly for adults, not children
The mother should be ashamed of herself.

The child might think its harmless fun, but the mother fully knows what everyone is thinking.

On a personal note, poledancers do nothing for me, they can't even dance.

cheap and very tacky i'm afraid
Ruby, I agree with you glad to see someone who is open minded :o )
Hear, hear laurence!
What would a little girl need pole dancing lessons for in the first place?for what reason,to tell their friends and teachers they can pole dance?? stupid, even if i did see it as ok and just harmless fun, what about the poles at the park, what if they started doing it there etc, wouldnt be just harmless fun then would it.Theres other HARMLESS FUN activities to do,pole dancing at 7 is ludicrous
If this mother wants to send her young daughter to pole dancing classes for exercise then that's fine by me. I think she is delusional, or maybe even a little thick..but never mind!

I prefer my daughters to go horse riding and to the local karate classes. Both are brilliant exercise, although are considered dangerous by some.
DJerba,
I'll stick to my Kickboxing + Kung-Fu if it's all the same with you. On the Firemans pole issue, firemen DONT use this item to wiggle their hips and gyrate in an openly sexuall way the way you are taught to be sexually provocative on your pole
i think this is awful - why on earth would you let you little girl do that?
It is sexual, a very sexual activity in fact - men (and some women) go to these pole dancing places to get turned on, why would you want a child even slightly associated with this??
I agree with what other people have said as well - there are many ways to keep children active and fit. People have said on here that ploe dancing is good for toning up - why would a child this young want to tone up? keep fit yes by all means but not get toned!!!!!
And the name alon Pole Brats implies a certain type of person as well - i certainly wouldnt want my child going to any kind of club that refereed to them as a brat. I dont like those Bratz dolls either and refuse to buy them for any of my friends kids
This what appears to the right of this AB page:

My three daughters are all adults now, but my grand-daughter is 10, and I would certainly not like to think of her 'pole dancing' for any reason.

It is not an argument to say that a child swinging on a pole in the park equates to pole dancing, and more than to say walking down the street equates to swinging your hips - it is entirely about perception.

The whole notion is sinister, and to excuse it as 'harmless fun' is to use a similar logic to paedophiles who contest that small children are sexually aware, and enjoy being abused.

You can call an ass a horse, but it won't shorten its ears.

Come on people, this is not 'fun', or 'harmless', it is unpleasant and inappropriate.
Anyone stop to consider that what might be important in this activity is how the child interprets it? Is he/she enjoying it, getting exercise from it, meeting new friends etc? I think sometimes caterwauling, neurotic, over-protective meemies who spy pedophiles and dirty old men lurking behind every tree and stalking every child trash the innocence of childhood.
Theres a million other things that children can do other than pole dancing, the children may be innocent yes,but other people have sinister thoughts. Just dont think its a very wise thing for parents to enrol their children in.PLENTY of other things to do
Pole dancing is a sexual dance so if she is learning sexy pole dancing then yes it is wrong. What I suspect is these little girls are learning quite innocent routines
Well, well - the Pole Dancing Lessons advert that was on the right of this page & which I copied & pasted onto here at 15:41, has disappeared! (Unless the advertising alternates from time to time)!

Or - p'raps the AB Team also think the wording in it wasn't appropriate for this site, let alone for little girls!
No - it's back again! As I thought, the adverts alternate!
I would safely guess that very few posters to this thread, including myself, have actually seen a 7 year old girl doing a 'pole dance'. Therefore, those of you who state that it is blatantly sexual are only imagining that it is so. I'd suggest that if your imagination runs that way YOU have a problem.
stewey
I have never seen an airplane crash but I imagine it's pretty bad
Lol john lambert, stewey that was a terrible thing to say, were thinking realisticly for our childrens welfare,Its innapropriate for a girl to do pole dancing lessons, whats the need???
John, I don't see a thread regarding airplane crashes and peoples' visualizations of them.
