Is it wrong to be homophobic ?And why?
40 Answers
Ok after a small joke about the gay pride march in blackpool things seem to have got out of hand and turned into a major differing of opinions between neilzulu and jack the hat.
so i was thinking.
im not homophobic , ive worked with some gays , guys and girls in the last few years and i find they can be fun and good company .
they can also be obnoxious sexist and extremely crude .
so the question is if theyrte just like us with all our faults then do they slag off " straights" in the same way some " straights 2 slag off "gays"?
and if they do , and i have known a few gays who were very HETROPHOBIC( though thats not a real word but explains what i mean quite adequately ) are homophobes better or worse than hetrophobes or are we all just as nasty about each other no matter what our sexuality?
so is it ok to be homophobic to the extent you say you object to it , but not to the extent of committing violence or descriminating against folk.
or is it totally wrong to even think homosexuality is wrong ?
and if we are just as bad then is it wrong to voice an opposing opinion ?
in a democracy where does freedom of speech or expression stop and control of the masses start ?
( hope this makes sense .)

Legend..........sorry I'd missed this last posting whilst trying to make Doc see sense.
You are right. There are objectionable bitchy queens. I don't like them myself...........but that is their personality, not their sexuality.
Even if they were straight, they would be mysoginists...........
I can't and don't want to defend them, in any case.........

jack, this is you: 'All I would ask is that people examine the reasons behind their 'repulsion', which sadly (Doc) they usually fail to do. They have decided that they do not like it and will brook no argument or discussion about it.'
You are so bound up in your progressive liberality that you will tolerate no intolerance from anybody else. If a person is repelled by the notion of homosexuality then that is his own business, he doesn't have to explain himself, argue about it, discuss it, debate it, or anything else it.

legend758duo, thanks for the name check in the question. All i said was i thought it was wrong, that is all. Jack chose to pursue an i am right - you are wrong stance on it.
I have my view ( it is wrong ), you have your views. Leave it there as even discussing this issue will bring up rantings and swearing. So leave it alone please.

An interesting - and passionate debate which highlights the fundamental root of all predjudice -
anyone can dislike anyone else for anything - predjudice is limitless.
To answer the question - yes it is wrong to be homophobic, for the same reason it is wrong to be racist - you cannot discriminate against a section of a free society simply because they live a different lifestyle.
Given the serious predjudice and difficulty that any gay man or woman lives with on a daily basis, I would suggest that no-one would choose a gay lifestyle simply to be 'different'.
It is a proven fact that some people are homosexual, not from choice, but through what ever forces decide these issues. They then have to live their lives as best they can in a heterosexual soceity which disctriminates against them on a minute-by-minute basis - not overtly, but in dozeons of little ways against which the gay person must develop a thick skin, and the patience of a platoon of saints.
Discrimination is fundamentally wrong - it is the hallmark of ignorance and bigotry. Free speeach allows us to debate the isse on sites like this - and amen to that - but to actively behave differently towards anyone who lives their life in a different way is to assume a moral high ground to which you have no right - and to invite a similar analysis of your own life by others - and to be found seriously wanting.

Whiffey, how dare you make assumptions about me and my 'progressive liberality'.
I am gay. I hold views about homosexuality that pertain to me specifically and to society itself.
You have no notion of any other views I hold, however, you are quite content to paint me as a Grauniad reading pinko leftie.
I have never read the Grauniad, I do not hug trees nor knit my own yoghurt and sandals are solely a summertime practicality.
I merely asked if you could qualify the statements you made with some sort of explanation. This you are manifestly unwilling to do, Fair enough. But then don't bemoan the fact that I have continued to challenge you.
